Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Sometimes there are circumstances that cause an individual to do said things. But that is no excuse, he should have discussed that with someone rather than being disrespectful. I always say go by the book, so that you cover your own ass, and should it get physical only as last resort. Saying this because my father was a Drill Instructor for 4 years, and i heard the stories on how things were handled, and he NEVER got physically accosted any of his troops. He however was in the presence of a few that had to be "taught a lesson" old school style, once instance a new recruit challenged a senior drill, in the presence of my dad, who was the ranking senior drill, and because the boys daddy was Brigadier Gen, he thought he was above the regulations, and was a pretty good size boy, and when felt froggy and leaped, the drill , who was a big ole boy also, knocked the wind out of his sail, when the recruit said to my father, who had his backed turned looking out the window, you saw that did you not drill sgt, my father said i saw nothing. long story short, the boy called his daddy, and daddy said straighten up and get your shit together,my father said he became the best recruit EVER.

The little "entitled" smartass needs to be taken down a notch or two. Disrespect has no place in the military !!

Why is a senior E5 handing out duties to juniors anyways? That's a team lead or Corporals duty. In the 90's, our Corporals and Seargents would have our asses on a special shit detail if you tried that...must be a millennial!

This happened in the field for my SFC. I was a Major, S-2 and, as I had been a Signal Officer in the past, was also the OIC for the Commo Det. We were with a Medical unit at JRTC. About half way through the 10 day operation, I was there at the TOC. There were about 4 commo guys standing there and the SFC told one of them, a PFC, to check the wire to one of the fighting positions. He said, "No, get someone else to do it. I was up most of the night and I am tired." My jaw dropped, as did the SFC's. He calmly restated the command and the PFC said about the same thing. I immediately excused myself. The SFC took the PFC outside and talked with him. Since the kid was so tired, the SFC gave him a hand-held urinal and confined him to his bunk for 3 days. The PFC did not mind this for the first day, but after that he was getting anxious to go outside. He used the hand-held urinal, ate in his bunk, and only came outside the tent - escorted - if he needed to use the hooter. He was ridiculed and snubbed by his buddies and other troops. Not sure what happened when he got back to garrison, as they were not part of the hospital command.

Simple take him off in private. Find actual issue then proceed. I also remind them next time take this issue up in private. If they make things public so can I but as you see I don't. This time they do it unless they were not trained how to do it and safely.
