Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

That's insubordination! 500 pushups, clean the latrines for a month, extra guard duty, KP, run around the base until you rack up 20 miles. If insubordination persists, in the brig, bread and water rations, make the the company do the extra duty and turn my head when the blanket parties happen. There has to be discipline. In the Korean ROCS, they shoot insubordinate enlisted in the head while in formation in the open and don't blink twice. The United States is horribly soft and practically invites insubordinate enlisted to the officer's mess to have a cocktail and watch a little HBO as administrative punishment lest their feelings get hurt and CNN covers those hurt feelings for five weeks between derailing Donald Trump and railroading the base CO for being too hard on his soldiers by not allowing the offending troop to also watch Starz!

While Wall to Wall counseling is probably in this lost souls near future (though highly frowned upon), one should have the offended party stand fast while all others are dismissed to complete their tasks. The aggrieved one is then escorted to the appropriate location to do the standard talking form of counseling with written documentation of what was discussed and how this behavior WILL be corrected ASAP; what steps will be taken to ensure it is corrected, and if necessary how to handle whatever life event(s) are causing this breakdown in military bearing and custom.

Then give the Private an opportunity to do or do not. And if the task isn't completed or is done so half ass that the entire chain of command up to garrison is now hunting you...well, have fun with that.

LOL this is retarded drill sergeant Larry would be turning in his grave right now my drill sergeant got killed in action in 2007 in city of Baghdad Iraq drill sergeant Larry taught me to keep my mouth shut and follow orders because you never know if by your disobedience and my beer last mission you follow orders from people who have been there longer who are wiser than you that's why they are there that's where the military has instructed them to teach us young recruits what to do and what not to do when you disobey a drill sergeant or an NCO you should be punished regardless if you would consider it to be tortured it's not it's only for your own good "suck it up change your socks Pop a Motrin drink some water and shut the fuck up" DS.SFC.LOWREY FT.SILL OK.

Don't have all the variables. For example ... is this normal behavior for this E2. If not ... first look to understand the behavior first. If it is ... I'm good with a throat punch

Having serve3d two posting at a minimum custody detention center we had to deal with young men that had attitude problems with authority. It was difficult to discipline as they were in basic but sometimes that is all they understand. I found that when you break a young "tough" guy down to tears you have reached the level where he becomes aware of his actions and his responsibility. I am proud to say that all I the young men I was assigned to train successfully completed the course and went on to serve out the remainder of their enlistment.
