Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Sounds as tho he's not ready to be part of something bigger than his attitude.

While in the Corps, I had more than a few "lapses of judgement". Each one was dealt with a good beating, PT till you puke and collapse, and crap details / duty. (sweeping Onslow Beach, fire watch on a dumpster, wrapped in riggers tape -sticky side out - to roll on the ground to police call for cigarette butts, etc.) Never had a negative entry in my SRB. Pain teaches faster focused lessons than paperwork. I was grateful for the lessons and the clean record. I was never "disciplined" unless i actually screwed up. I was never bitter afterwards. Toilet paper should be soft, fine china is to be handled delicately, warriors should be forged to disciplined, hard, effective warriors.

Flame spray him in public so the others know what's coming their way if they act up.

Not military but I am in law enforcement. I had marine as a SGT in my rookie school. I can honestly say he would of lost his mind and most likely have throw me out of the building.... I'd expect that guy to get his ass knocked out immediately for doing that in the military. I know I know, things have changed and everyone has to be babied.
