Been faced with similar situations several times. ( 30 years....private thru the ranks to captain) This must not be allowed to stand. You can not afford to lose this confrontation. FIRST Praise in public/ punish in private. All troops, but the "smart mouth" are put to work under your second in rank, elsewhere. SECOND You retain a reliable witness. Never be alone with the "smart mouth".... when the situation gets tight he will use everything he can including counter charges against you THIRD you address "smart mouth " in a calm low voice. You ask the malcontent if he understands the seriousness of disobeying a lawful order of an NCO... You give him one last chance to explain himself and / or comply. If he has no valid reason for his actions and still does not comply.....you along with your witness march his tired ass to the platoon sergeant and request disciplinary action
Several things you should do and / or not do.... Never threaten a specific punishment; if he fails to get that specific punishment he will consider it a win..... prepare for such a possible situation by coordinating with the platoon sergeant in advance stating that IF you find it necessary to bring a problem to him you expect his full support..... you try to settle all problems yourself but do not hesitate to use the chain of command as a last resort..... there are two types of punishment ( unofficial) internal without a record (official) UCMJ.... again try to be unofficial as much as possible ( you do not want to air your dirty laundry or give the command the impression you can not handle problems).... never touch the man.... lose your temper.... or raise your voice ( quiet controlled voice is much more threatening if handled right)
As a Drill Sergeant I had two attempts on my life....$300 dollars damage to my car.....and had a gun shoved in my gut.....I handled them all..... they do not control you; YOU command them

You tell the PFC to take the day off and do whatever he wants. The others will pick up his slack as we are Marines and it is critical to work as a team . Then you grind the others into the ground, reminding them every moment that they are picking up the slack for the PFC. You constantly direct the others to look at the PFC who is the cause of the team short fall. Remind them that he may not want to carry his brother out of harms way. He doesn't feel like protecting his brothers today. Why should he have to do anything? the team will take care of the shortfall. Guaranteed he will be following orders for the rest of his time of service after just one night of sleep, or lack thereof.
