Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

You probably can't do this anymore, but in my day it was not uncommon for the senior Petty Officer to dismiss everyone, except for said shit bird AND the biggest man in the ranks. The senior PO would then explain to the big guy that Airman Apprentice (or Seaman Apprentice or whatever the case)
felt imposed upon to complete the assignment that had been given. It would then be explained that the task had to be done and he, Apprentice Big Guy would not only be responsible for the original assignment he had been given BUT ALSO the assignment shit bird had been given. Then the original apprentice shit bird would be told to go to the geedunk and get a milk shake and just relax the rest of the day. The issue would find a satisfactory resolution, which usually meant the Apprentice shit bird would be seen later completing the task or would be seen the next sporting a temporary tattoo around one or both eyes. Lesson learned. I'm certain that sort of conflict resolution would not be allowed today, and that may be where the problem lies.

I lived this situation as an E-4 (though technically I wasn’t a shitbird),got an article 15. Got 14/14 for it. Became good friends with said NCO eventually, we strode side by side in the Gulf war together , both of us SSGs at the time. A learning lesson.

The world ain't going to hell in a handbasket, we're already there. Now imagine if you would/can, your kissing the ground, the wizz of the bullets are only inches away, your ears are ringing so loud all you can hear is your heart beating. Pieces of your once buddies are flying around like feathers, as you attempt to crawl to gain some assumed safety you have to slither through your best friends guts and taste of his brains that flew into your mouth. Now you hear your leader ( that mean old sergeant, or lifer lt.) bleat out a command to get you outa the present killing situation. In today's standards ( social society called the military) as with disgusting article, one would hear " WHY?? I like it here, if I move those unreasonable meanies will try to hurt me, I'll just stay here and try to reason with those ole hurtful people, they just need to understand we are all just alike and want our mother's titt, make Sassy, Dunebug or Montrose move". I'm glad that my days are shorter now and I won't have to see the further decline , destruction, or dissolvement of any sort of meaningful, effective US military. With all the malignant hoard of insanity, with more to come, that has removed the honorable high standards of service to be that of requiring only a PULSE. I suppose with the 40 years of "social reform" that has been evolving right before our eyes, has removed the essential and most treasured personal characteristics of our being. Whether you are a believer of God, or not, the Devine values or traits of a person forever have rang true and essential for a Free, functioning Social Order, Truth, discipline, respect for Authority, and respect for one's self. Like it or not, accept or reject it, it's is the choice of the person and the now, weak or useless person that must demand authority and earn his respect. Discipline is never a born with trait of the person, yet required equal to any creature that man has domesticated for personal or productive means. Yet we must begin to ask ourselves, what children have we created and allowed to mature or be immature grown Brats? A mother tell the baby with soft words that " mommy doesn't like that, and it is not very nice to hit mommy", the "talk in to, time out, you can't play video games for 1 hour, no McDonald's for you young man". If a child raises hell or even strikes a teacher in school, only gets them a few days suspension. Discipline is not only gone but ultimately out lawed. If some these brats disagree with or are accurately described by words or terms that have existed for eons, these are labeled and determined by these Sheep Brats and the people sucking up to them or are of equal minds with, declare a Law in hope's of removing the HURTFUL terms. Now, imagine this shell of a "man" that has been produced with what has been described, that is just the tip of the ice berg, becoming a formidable defender of Our Country? This degenerate excuse for a soldier in the US Military should have and would have in my time is service been knocked on his ass, dragged out back by the DI and his assistants, had the hell beat outa him, (no facial blows that would leave any marks) dragged to the CO, who was a 4 tour Vet of VN, who would have this turd thrown in the stockade or a few weeks. After released from the stockade be forced into admin. training for 1 month, then returned to duty, if no improvement, would receive a DD or a Summary CM and given Undesirable or Unable to adapt Discharge. But no long is that to be. So DI's CO's, you have my deepest regards and sympathy, now go attempt to transform a little lamb into a bulldog. IMO. So blast away with all the cut downs, I am a Hitler, etc.etc.etc.

If you allow a subordinate to disregard or disrespect you, then your leadership is at question. Rules and directions are designed to be followed and obeyed for the benefit and the safety of the subordinate and the unit as a whole but it must be enforced evenly and effectively.

The Army had changed so much, I wound up finishing my time in the Army National Guard. In many ways, that was worse. But that worse was in a shorter period of time. 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks in the summer. Thank God, I'm retired. I hope that things have gotten better.

So! The E2 is bucking for E1? Mass punishment does not seem appropriate because I don't read that the Platoon is acting that way and may not effectively roll downhill to the PFC. Since it is no longer PC to take them out back and thrash them, Office Hours (Non Judicial Punishment) becomes the default for that sort of blatant crap. If you can't hit them in the gut, hit them in the wallet. Set the example so that it won't happen again.

I have a young troop in my formation who was a bit of a smart ass. I put him up front to lead PT. After that session he kept his mouth shut. Once he realized the load that you carry being in front of the troops, he gained a new insight.
