Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I don't like to dirty up someones record, he might be your best troop two years from now. Apparently he needs structure and won't find it while he has an audience. Isolate him/her

Back in my day, we would have handled this a bit different than the "acceptable" way today. Disobeying a direct order from a superior should NEVER be tolerated, especially with other troops/sailors in attendance. He would be taken to a superior, he would receive EMI, he would be written up. Junior and I would have a serious come to Jesus meeting and would be forewarned that if behavior like this were to continue, he may just get busted back to his MEPS Station. Then, if he ever got off of restriction, he had better hope I didn't see him off base.

When I was in basic, 1989, Fort Benning, we had three guys first week that decided they'd screwed up and didn't want to be in the Army. So they told Drill they weren't doing no push ups.
Battalion CO posted the Field Grade Article 15s for them for us to look at all through basic.
When we were out processing Benning to go to our 1st units they were just out of the stockade & 3 months no pay & 3 months hard labor and getting processed out of the Army just like they wanted.
A lesson still with me 30 years later.

On a Carrier with lots of senior E5 and E6 buddies this is easy. Take the young lad aside and inform him he can be farmed out to a division with really nasty dirty jobs they would love to pass on to smart mouth punks. If he doesn't believe you he can ask the others and get back to you. Clean one bulge or snake one drain that job will look real good.

I have always loved scenarios like this. See I think the E2 just needs to learn military order; this is what I did to my E2 since we are all grown men right? E2 you have KP every other day when you are not on KP you will be on Guard duty, when you are not on guard duty you will be rear road guard, when you are not on rear road guard you will be on CQ and staff duty runner and your leave has been denied. Anything you don't want E2? SGT Major

That's insubordination! 500 pushups, clean the latrines for a month, extra guard duty, KP, run around the base until you rack up 20 miles. If insubordination persists, in the brig, bread and water rations, make the the company do the extra duty and turn my head when the blanket parties happen. There has to be discipline. In the Korean ROCS, they shoot insubordinate enlisted in the head while in formation in the open and don't blink twice. The United States is horribly soft and practically invites insubordinate enlisted to the officer's mess to have a cocktail and watch a little HBO as administrative punishment lest their feelings get hurt and CNN covers those hurt feelings for five weeks between derailing Donald Trump and railroading the base CO for being too hard on his soldiers by not allowing the offending troop to also watch Starz!
