I am being told to go to PT by the command on only 4-5 hours of sleep. As a junior enlisted, how do I solve this problem?

We have a new 1SG and new commander. The 1SG noticed one day that only 5 people in the whole company showed up to PT. Now he put out to all the platoon Sergeants that everyone must show up to PT at either the 0530 formation or the 1600 formation.
However, my section is the only one in the hospital that has a 1600-0000 shift. I am being told by my first line that the 1SG says that I have to be at the morning formation, no exceptions.
I don’t want to sound like I’m whining but at the same time it’s unfortunate that I have to explain to myself as to why this isn’t right.
As a junior enlisted I do feel stuck.
How do I bring this issue up and solve this effectively and professionally?
Also: Do you know of any Army Regulations that can support anything?

Go to PT at 0530. Then go back to bed. Unit formations, PT, training, etc... always have to be worked out with shift workers. But sometimes we just have to suck it up. Use the chain of command procedures if you feel something is wrong. As my favorite E3 used to say... "Yes, this is why we get paid the big bucks."

I agree with you and your situation. However, you wouldn’t last a month in the Navy.

Quit your whining and get your butt to the PT Formation. Talk with your Leader and ask him/her to take up the issue, but until it is resolved make the formations and do your duty. If you do not like it look for a transfer.

You are whining; you can sleep after PT. However, you can request through the chain-of-command that a third time be established, or if you could do the 1600 formation.

OMG cupcake. You’re in the military. You better realize and understand what is expected of you. Hurry up and wait, do this do that right now etc. Y don’t work 9 to 5 and if you are deployed any schedule you may have had is out the window. You do the very best you can all the time even if you’re sleeping. It’s not about you and your comfort. It is about everyone you stand beside and come in contact with. If you are unable to do that you need to work at Micky D’s .

Just go to PT. It's easier than the future hell that will rain on you! Then you can go back to bed.

I guess your higher ups is trying to put a statement across about PT. Since they are new to your company, they might be trying to establish themselves. Don't get me wrong, too much sleep and no PT equals to laziness and lack stamina. You're lucky you have that much time to sleep. You'll be surprised how much criticism you'll get by asking this question especially you being in the Army. All I'll say is, "Embrace The Suck and Drive On"! I will not dog you on this even though I'm Old School Army where PT is life but you got me chuckling when you asked the question.
Talk to your section Sergeant to relay to higher ups if your section can do PT like noon time. Good luck.

Oh my God! I can't believe this. Grow up if you're in the Army. I think you wouldn't make the grade in either the " Black Boot" Army, and especially the older "Brown Boot" Army. Be a soldier and suck it up!! Make sure you boots are spit shined, and gig line is straight for starters

Ask that there be a 1500 PT since your shift begins at 1600. I would bet the ISGT and COmmander were not thinking of the Split Shifts when the times were announced. I used to work Split Shifts and got screwed a lot until I realized my Seniors were all Day Workers and did not realize that Shift workers were getting screwed a lot of the time. Make your case and see what happens. Be professional and don't WINE like this!
Sometime DAY Shifts Screw the Night shifts without thinking!

4 to 5 hours of sleep is normal sleep hours at sea... not sure why you think it's a problem.

You know how you solve this problem? You go to PT.
"This one time in combat ..." I made my troops conduct an early morning operation in response to enemy activity after none of us had slept for 2 days. It sucked, but you suck it up. Only the living are able to do that.

Suck if up
I'm a retired Air Force member, so don't hate..I see you have at least 2 options. One is stay awake till PT, then come in from PT and go to sleep. 2. take a nap from time you get home after shift, then go to PT, after PT go to sleep till you have to get up for work.. I was in several RPA squadrons, which were 24/7 units, so I know the pain in the ass it can be doing shift work. I really don't understand the 8 hr shifts.. Even the AF had 12 hr shift, for ER, and Hospital side.. Now we did have some day walkers working only 8 hr shifts, they worked Mon- Friday.. I will just about bet you are working 5 days a week on your 8 hr shift, I would much rather work 12 hr shifts and work less days. Are you switching shifts or Hard scheduled shifts, ie do you work 6 weeks of days, 6 weeks second shift and then 6 weeks of nights? Is everyone on all shifts passing PT? Got to look at the other side of the coin, probably having issues, with your shift, or having issues with all the shifts.. I hate the mentality of punish everyone for one or two people making mistakes, but that also happens.

The Army is only required to give you 4 hours of sleep, and that doesn't even have to be 4 consecutive hours. You may not want to sound like you're whining...but you're whining.

get up off your ass and go to PT , I can remember going on operations where I didn't sleep for three days straight , it's part of the job , the mission does not stop because you only got 4 hours sleep , if you can't do it then get out , your a risk to your fellow soldiers lives.

You have plenty of time. Rather than bucking PT, have someone look at the work schedule. 16:30 to midnight is an odd one anyway.

Go to PT in the morning. Then surface your issue to your immediate supervisor in the chain of command. That places you in the drivers' seat. Remember in a combat environment you often get only 2 or 3 hours if you are lucky.

4 to 5hours of sleep is not bad. You can function on that. If u were on the battlefield or a serious
Exercise you barley sleep. Being in the military can be tough but push through. Imagine being at NTC and having to pull guard......no rest for the weary.

This seems to be a recurring thread. It seems to me like the military needs to stop allowing pansies to join!

As a 3rd shift (civilian) nurse, I work 10 hour shifts and I’m lucky to get a solid 4 hours of sleep in between household chores, grocery shopping, paying bills and keeping appointments during daytime hours. Sleep is a luxury and in time you’ll figure out what your priorities are. I also hold down a part time job working as an armed security officer on the weekends, giving me only one day off during the week. I’d gladly trade you places!

Get more sleep, go to bed earlier.
I’ve heard of stories where some crew have been awakened for GQ in the middle of their sleep cycles or right they got off their mid-watches. Barbaric! Call your union rep or join the merchant marine.

I'm going to comment on my own experience. I've worked a lot of 12 hour shifts where we had meetings and training afterwards and PT was on our own time. The supervisors who told us we only needed 4 hours of sleep did PT with the company and left at 1600 hours. Our NCOIC didn't even come to work on time after PT in the morning. Some supervisors try to be fair, others don't care.

The army only as to give you 4 hours of sleep. So it is your responsibility to get your butt out of bed and go do pt for an hour and a half

You can start to solve the problem by quit being a pansy. For goodness sakes. Your in the military not a social sewing circle. What the hell has become of our military.

What did you expect? Call the enemy and explain to them that they should only fight during banker's hours so you can get your beauty sleep!

Is this a real question? What the hell happened to the Army? You say that you don’t want to sound like you’re whining but, guess what, you do. Take your A** to PT and catch Z’s when you can. It’s really that simple. Your life doesn’t always line up with the needs of the Army. Guess which one take priority.

I remember being told in boot the Army guarantees 1 hour rest per day, that isn't true either. Deal with it, take it out on killing enemy!

It's not just military. I pulled 40+hours in three days with a civilian public health laboratory when we had an emergency situation, and it is not unknown to work 18-20 hour days in a crunch for a client with my civilian consulting firm. It's time to put on the big boy pants and deal with life.
