I have a curious question if you are recieving VA disability can one also collect SSI for your disability?

SPC Robert Borton I think you meant SSDI, which you can collect.
SSI (which is what you actually typed) is income-based, and your benefits would likely put you over the limit. I'd call SSA to find out for sure.

SPC Joshua Blotzer - There is no income limit on SSDI. A 100% disabled vet getting full benefits can get both SSDI (if they qualify) and their VA pay. That same vet can probably NOT get SSI, because their VA pay will be higher than the SSI limit.

Are you in the military now going through a MED Board? The SSDI is based on how much you have paid into SS. And I think it tops around $2200/month outlay per month.

No I have been out since 1989 and didn't start getting VA Disability in 2011. Is SSDI also like a percentage like VA Disability

SPC Robert Borton - I believe SS looks at as a binary question. Yes you can work. No you can not work. Apply as soon as the VA has a determination that coincides with the requirements of SS.

SPC Robert Borton - I really dont know what I typed earlier. Please disregard anything I typed earlier. lol SSDI is based on how much you paid into Social Security. The SSDI amount tops off at 3011 dollars a month. I got a VA disability then I contacted Social Security and told them I wanted to apply for SSDI. Contact the Social Security office and make an appointment. They will help you apply. I have no clue about working and collecting SSDI. I am sorry about any confusion I might have caused.

SPC Joshua Blotzer - I really like the fact VA funds are non-taxable and I get a tax break on SSDI. I always get back around 7000 dollars in tax refunds each year because I pay a lot in taxes.

There are specific rules in place, but yes. It is usually when you hit the "unemployable" stage (60-70%) on VA side for a disability that this comes into play.
