He should be held in the books as a loss therefore they don’t need his number to count towards their umbers. They are probably harassing him

Personally if he is a half-stepper cut him loose and nail him on his DD-214 re-up code just in case as a contingency plan if he decides that he wants his job back. Let him go home. Failure to follow procedures to maintain a military standard to be done by all is a reality that when you take an oath either maintain it or ask for release.

This Soldier should have already taken the exit(Army and VA) physical exam and the unit should have the Soldier annotated as a loss. The chain of command must keep in mind that of the Soldier is injured during the APFT and the Soldier chooses to pursue medical care this will push the Soldier past the ETS date. Unless things have changed this is reportable to BDE and DIV because now the unit has a non mission capable individual plus the individual is past the ETS date. My exit physical exams exempted me from taking an APFT and it was annotated in my out processing packet.

I was harassed like this for the last 3 months of my service. Back to back guard duty, pt test every week, fat boy program when I wasn't overweight (guy put his foot on the scale), and I was supposed to be PCS'ing to Germany and reuping for the 3rd time. Phone calls in the middle of the night, and you know why? I refused to do a horizontal favor for a married SSgt in my chain of command. He even tried to get me court martialed in my last 5 days in the unit and had a Capt help him with it. The Capt who I didn't even know actually showed up at my door 2 weeks later and asked me for a date. You can guess what my answer was.....colorful and very BLUE. I was on career status and that SSgt told me he would "tank" my career if I didn't. Well he did and I didn't!!

I am no longer surprised at the stories behind the stories that large organizations with lots of people in them produce; and, the silliness inherent in some of them are due primarily to the fact that all people including soldiers are actually humans and can do marvelous things and also screw up a 2 car funeral. Most of us just do what we need to do and avoid complicating things beyond basic contradictions inherent in complicated scenarios. We have a lot of our best war stories about creeps that did this kind of stuff.

SPC Robin Price-Dirks - One of my sons was in "Wounded Warrior" status at JB Lewis/McCord. He was put on BDE SDNCO 3 times a week, and required to drive to the post, DESPITE bing on narcotics. He and other NCO were constantly harassed and belittled. In my son's case, the CO and 1SG actually contacted CID to have him charged with malingering. When he went for his CID interview, he took his medical records, and his full Colonel MD's phone number. When the Agent reviewed his record, and spoke to the Colonel MD, he called the CO AND the 1SG in my son's presence. Told them to drop it or they could face charges for harassment. Ultimately, I convinced him to NOT drive to the base -- at the time, there was NO on-base housing for single NCO's and they had to live off-post. I convinced him that if he'd be in a traffic accident, even if not his fault, he could end up charged with DUI. Thereafter, they had to send a sedan for him as his profile listed, "NOT TO RIDE IN TACTICAL VEHICLES." The kid did three full comvat tours as an Infantryman, and between tours, at Ft. Carson, he underwent back surgery for part of his injuries.
Reportedly, his CO and 1SG were relieved for cause over how they treated Wounded Warriors. While that's not confirmed, that's what one of his fellow NCO's told him after he ETS'd.

They are not supposed to give a pt test. It needs to be no physical activity his last 30 days so he doesn’t hurt himself.

On the one hand, I don't see a huge need for the PT test. On the other, I am not sure why this is supposed to be such a huge deal. It's not like they won't let you out if you don't pass it, is it? I feel like there must be more to the story.

I guess I would take the test, do my best (which was always mediocre; I am not an athlete) and then move on.

SPC Stiv ChenRobbins - Actually, in my case, I was to get a MSM on retirement (something that in those days was almost exclusively an Officer award). They also tried to claim that retirement was a "favorable personnel action" and 1 month before I was to go on terminal leave I was "ordered" to take a PT test or they would (try to) stop my retirement ... a special 1 person (just for me) event. I was on "profile" anyway, but I passed it, got my medal and retired. They still messed with me afterwards anyway since the VA never got my medical records; they were never found, but that is another long saga. This is the short version but you get the idea.

I guess it also illustrates what we used to say, that the people you don't mess with are the cooks, the medics and the guys who fill out your paperwork. Not saying you did, just that all three categories can make your life miserable in ways you can't much push back against.

I have a soldier with an ETS date is in 20 days, and the command wants to give him a PT test. Does the soldier have to do it/pass or fail?

Before I retired, my 1sgt wanted me to take the PT test even though I was already out processing. He and I had bump heads quite a few times. So he lets the company know that I am taking the PT test. The day of the PT test I show up to take it. I have never failed a PT Test in my whole military career. So the first event is the sit ups. I get into position and sit up, I hold that position for 2 minutes and lay down. 1 sit up. The push up is the next event, I get into the start position, time begins, I hold the up position for 1 minute and 50 seconds, go down and come up. 1 push up and time. Time for the run, time starts, i place 1 foot in front of the other and continue for the 2 miles. 3 hrs 15 minutes later I cross the finish line. The company had to stay until the last person cross the finish line. The 1sg was pissed beyond believe, I explained that I was following his orders and doing the PT Test, however he never said I had to pass it. He tried to get me to redo the PT test but the SMG told him to let it go and learn from how he treated those under him.

No, the Soldier is NOT required to take the PT test if they are within 179 days of ETSing. Here's why - 1.) The Soldier should have already cleared their outprocessing medical screening for disability evaluation. 2.) If the Soldier gets hurt during the PT test - then the Soldier will be retained on active duty on medical hold and convalescent leave until the injury has healed or been fixed, and then the Soldier must go through a medical evaluation process again - which may now qualify them for a medical retirement if they reach a disability evaluation of 30% or more.

Your command needs to stop being stupid - and focus on the Soldiers who are remaining in uniform and stop playing the hazing and harassment game with the Soldier who is leaving within days. I would also recommend this Soldier notify the IG about this issue, and file a Congressional complaint as it seems the command is just hazing and harassing them, and the Soldier should also get a profile to be exempt from the PT test. One thing is for certain, the Soldier does not have to take the PT test, but is also sounds like the command may want to use that as justification to give the Soldier a General Discharge or not give them an award for their service.

This is the reason the Army has a hard time keeping good Soldiers or recruiting now - word about this kind of ridiculous behavior by senior leaders gets out and it makes people think the Army is being ran by a Frat House Crew. If I were the O-6 or CG of this unit, I would fire the unit leaders for this kind of non-sense as they clearly are not focused on taking care of Soldiers, takong care of the mission, and ensuring those who have served are fully prepared to leave the Army when it comes their time to do so - either by end of service obligation or by retirement or by medical discharge or medical retirement.

That is absolutely amazing! My sister-in law is a Chief of NICU at a hospital in SC. The heroes of this world are those who dedicate thwir lives to saving children. God placed your friend where they were needed most in this world - and becaue of a bad CO - your friend made a wise decision to move beyond the Army... which had your friend deployed, they may not be with us today or may have been too injured to become and serve as a NICU nurse. Great story! Keep sharing it with people, because some Soldiers feel that they have nothing without the Army - and as you know, nothing is further from the truth. The Army gives us the tools to plan, prepare for contingencies, rise above challenges, work as a TEAM, adapt to any environment, be resilient, and achieve success even in unrealistic conditions. That is what separates us from civilians - so use that to your advantage! Good luck!

See from my experience its always a sfc or sum1 that does not have power of pin pushing the issue! & well 9/10 the commander is usually the minority in the company (i.e. 1 commander per company) & sumtimes commander has to rely on sfc , so this is 1 of them drug deals where commander ' lets sfc push this issue to satisfy sfc anal control issues of not being in control but that commander has to rely on sfc for other things .....
I see so many sfc say same response , but how many sfc has taken a p.t. test 7 days before thet ets/retirement date - or have taken 6 p.t. test in last 6 months of service before ets date , bc oops your p.t. card keeps getting lost ? & well you have to do it over bc the army , uncle sam needs a p.t. offical card on file ....
Sumtimes as a sfc , when you get to the end of road ' tis (time in service) is up , & after 20 years have become intuitionalized - just got take leap of faith & cross over to o.c.s !
Besides its not taking lower rank ' 2nd lt out ranks a sfc any day !
As sfc dont say the rigamortis of officer dont do no work & i aint no punk & finna be an officer ...
That last comment is why sfc
push p.t test 11 days before & ets date ?
1.) What is not said is why , was this p.t. tracked 180 days a day before the 179th day ?
2.) If sfc wants this/demands this p.t test , lets show up saturday 9a.m. & make it a grand dogg & pony show !
3.) Lets say you going but we wanna make it granduar ! Saturday 9a.m. be there & ets or be square ?

If I were this young soldier, I would show up as ordered and do the test. But I would probably have a terrible spill on the run and hurt myself to the point of being on medical hold (all faked of course). And then write my Congressmen and Senators and demand an investigation be done as to why I was forced to do it with only 20 days out. And have Mommy and Daddy call and complain while also contacting the representatives in Washington.

SFC Luke Bartley what's your take on this? Are you siding with a piss poor Marine or the side of reason? The soldier is a loss, granted, and should not take an APFT for any reason, as he's probably already out processing. But, there's no reason that he can't do PT. Dickerson is just a poor excuse of a former NCO, and I have no idea how he ever made Gunny.

Does "the command" want him to take one, or someone between him and the command team? Ninety percent of the time when Soldiers say, "My chain of command said (insert asinine requirement)..." they really mean a team leader or squad leader, who either doesn't understand the Commanders intent, or doesn't want to bother to ask for an exception that makes good sense.

As your your question, yes they have to, and yes they can still he flagged, and that would affect their ability to join the RC and would give them an RE3 on their 214.

You won't find anything anywhere in writing that says no APFT within X number of days of ETS, because it's not a real thing. It's more of a custom and tradition. Even when I separated in 2000 the norm was no PT after your ETS physical. But you won't find that written as a rule anywhere.

SFC James J. Palmer IV aka "JP4" this is a VERY persistent myth. It is STRONGLY discouraged after ETS physical because injury at that point is a MASSIVE headache for everone and had the potential to REALLY screw the Soldier over. However it is not actually against reg. (Unit policy, may, however, have something to say, in which case it would violate AR 600-20/ UCMJ Art 92.)

MAJ Carlos Felipe Sanchez Sir, the question is not whether it SHOULD happen but whether it CAN happen. A Commander, by regulation can order a PT Test within 20 days and it would be a lawful order, and therefore must be complied with. Some units or installations have local policy which prohibits, but it is not against reg.

In my opinion, the Commander, in 99.5% of cases shouldn't issue that order. But that was not the question.

CSM John Mead - When I came back, I went to Ft Lawton,, Wa. Generally good duty and pretty laid back which was fine at first, but they had no clue as to what to do with me and made me the Post Commander's driver. He never used the staff car. I made ID cards 22 afternoons a week, answered post locator calls and did a little typing. I did go before the board for SSG, but my school release came through and out I went.

It was on Magnolia Hill, Seattle. It is now Discovery Park. The main tenants were the 7th Base Post Office which provided the mail outlet for many APO/FPO in the Pacific, and an ASA Detachment. Had a small Dispensary, PX, Library, Bowling Alley and a one night a week theater. It had served as debarkation point for WWII.
