I'm planning to hop over to Germany and travel around Europe. As a retiree, can I use the BX overseas?

MSgt Brian Williams That depends entirely on the SOFA that was signed between the country and the United States. In Turkey the short answer is no. I cannot speak to other countries SOFA rules. In Japan, the short answer is yes.

Yes, sometimes. However you may find it difficult to get on Base other than Rhanstein. If you do use the BX you are required to pay the local Tax. There are Customs officials in each base that can enforce the rule. This was at least as of 2014. Thank you for your service.

I believe you can but if you are planning on staying at the Edelweiss Hotel in Garmisch which is the Armed Forces Recreation Center in Germany I think because of status of forces agreements with Germany you need to be station overseas or a retiree living in Germany. Personally I think this stinks but if anyone has updated info on this please post!

Thanks. I hadn't planned to travel that far south this time. Basically looking to visit my old stomping grounds in The Netherlands and then coming south back to Germany to Stuttgart and then Ramstein. I'm thinking of taking the train up and back and renting a car once I get into The Netherlands.

MSgt Brian Williams - You probably already know then that if you are renting a car that it's probably best to be adept at driving a standard transmission. I know at times when I rented a car in Germany that often all the automatics would be rented because many younger folks don't know how to drive standard but there were usually standard trans cars left.

Not a problem. I was part of a mobile unit when I first came in the Air Force so I learned on a jeep, 6 Pax, and a deuce and a half with an S-141 in tow. Most severe tests were backing the Deuce up a C-130 ramp without bouncing and pullling a tow up Palgong Mountain in Korea.
