I've accepted an E-5 slot at another National Guard Company. What are some things to expect as an E-4 going into an E-5 slot before BLC?

Be the best leader you can be and the leader you would want to follow. Get to BLC ASAP. Go out of your way to look out for your subordinates best interests and always be the proverbial "shit umbrella". Don't ever assume you know better than anyone subordinate to you, listen to your Soldiers, then make a decision and execute. Live the NCO creed.

I was an E-4(p) who once slid into an Army Reserve E5 slot; from my experience I say expect that THEY expect you to get promoted sooner rather than later, so do what you must to make that happen.

All soldiers are expected to pass drill and ceremony, put test, and lead pt already on the first day. Land Nav is supposed to be gone. No outside STX and instead of the three writing assignments, they were going to do five I believe. A lot more writing and class time. This was told to me by my SGLs who were given the heads about the changes.
I wrote a final survey to USASMA about keeping in the STX because of leadership decisions and land nav because it was important as a survival skill in personnel recovery.

Knowing the fine balance between authority and that you're still an E-4. Dont carry the chip on your soldier especially at a new unit. The trials and errors I had to figure how to influence others without being overbearing was a good skill I carried over through BLC and transitioning into being a sergeant

If you haven't brushed up upon it, look into filling out a DA form 638 and a counseling statement, at the minimum. Make sure you fully utilize the counseling statement to the full ability. It's an extremely effective tool as a leader. Know the fine line between position and grade and don't assume you know more than anybody. Tread lightly as well because you may have taken that slot from somebody internally. All a fine balance.

You are no longer friends with Spc and bellow. You need to come into your new Job rank and position willing to learn. You are now the Standard bearer. Know your rules and regulations and where to referance material. Be know do. Ask your senior nco's for help that what their there for. Good luck

Many new E-5's have been in your position. I budded up with a solid NCO and took his example. Just take your time and observe your soldiers and leaders. Your new Platoon Sargeant will mentor you into what is required of the unit's standard. You should show up at drill looking sharp, in dress uniform, hair cut and highly shines shoes. First impressions go a very long way in what kind of NCO you are. Leadership is learned at all levels not just schools. Learn everything about your MOS you can until your class date comes up.

I think they promote you to CPL when they do that prior to BLC. So you're an NCO then, that comes with a certain level of respect for rank. That said, your guys are going to need an adjustment period. I know a guy who I still catch myself calling him by name instead of CPL because he just got promoted. You're going to a different unit so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Im not sure how it works but ill never forget where i came from and i feel thats an important aspect when it comes to your joes... you have to show them your there to help them progress but to also respect the rank, it will be different not being with the family that ive grown with but i think it will be a life changing experience for me, the opportunity to better not only myself but the joes who follow me. Thanks for the comment brother
