What's the next best benefit if your current/future employer cannot offer you a higher salary? I know it may depend on the situation, but overall, what is most attractive?

Time, my wife was refused a pay raise, but negotiated from 8 hours a day, 5 days a week to 8.5 hours per day, 4 days a week.

And 6 hours on the 5th day of the week so she would still get her full 40 hours?

PO1 John Miller - There is no fifth day. She has no reduction in salary, no reduction in benefits, etc. etc. etc. She just works 4 days a week. There are some exceptions. She is expected to stay as many hours as needed to complete government proposals, or to accompany Federal and State auditors during an audit. She is a salaried employee so she was not entitled to overtime, but she also got them to agree to overtime pay if she was required to work more than 48 hours in a given pay period.

Satisfaction. Being pulled to the middle of the team, given real responsibilities with tangible impact, and then being recognized for what you delivered.

Good points. Appreciation and recognition can get overlooked and are quite valuable. Thank you for your thoughts!

That is worth a lot, too bad more employers don't seem to be aware of the value of those basic things, then people will go above and beyond because they want to !

Having a job where I made a difference was more important than pay. A good 401K is vital for future retirement.

Good answer. A 401k with strong options and a good match is a huge advantage. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Job security... knowing that if I make a mistake I will not be fired... longevity of other employees is also a good sign

PO3 Bob McCord - Good advice. I agree it depends on the situation, your own goals, and what's important to you at that particular period in life.
