If you could change one thing about your 'boot camp' experience, what would it be?

I can't think of anything about basic training I would change as far as the program. A good friend I made there didn't make it through because of a hip fracture I would change that if I could.

Not getting grouped in with convicts. Somehow, I wound up in a platoon that dealt strictly with go to jail or go to the army. funny thing was, my D.I. , would take care of her cocaine druggy hubby at night and then take her emotions out on us. later on I found out, my recruiter was an Idiot and was just filling spots. ugh ...

I went through Navy boot camp in 1963 in San Diego. I wish we could have spent more time with the BAR and Thompson - fine weapons!

I would not change a thing, other than add a bit. One of the best experiences at the time of my young life. Many times I have thought how nice it would have been to go back and get back in shape. But a bit late now.

LCpl McTIERNAN it is never too late to get back in shape. I am 68 yrs old now and have lost 25 lbs since I started going back to the gym (24 HR Fitness) and working out. I am now back to my intermediate weight goal of 205 and working towards getting under 200. Now I am going to the gym onboard CamPen since 24HR raised my rates. Have to drive a little further but it is worth it. Hang in there! GySgt USMC (Retd)

Gunny, my error, I would like to get into the same shape as I was exiting boot camp, and before training to go professional martial arts. At 65 I also consider myself in great shape and often out perform 20 year olds for EMS events. Sunday supporting a triathlon. However, today I could not now get through boot camp nor 2nd ITR. Congrats and stay in shape. I lost a bit with two recent operations and am in process of returning to the shape I should be. Gunny Ed who is now 88 years young had the police called to the Country Club because as starter he was going to whip someones rear end - last Sunday. Ya just can't stop Marines! Looking forward to attending the John Basilone Parade on the 20th in Raritan with the Immaculata High School Marching Band.

LCpl Dan McTiernan - I didn't say that I was in great shape, just getting back to where I should be. Besides I only weighed 147 when I went in in '65 while standing 6'4". My nickname in boot camp was "Metrecal". Also I have had a quad bypass and now belong to the zipper club. Hang in there, you will make it.

Finally, someone in my age group! BCT - Ft. Dix 1969 and supposed to do AIT INF there as well. However, seemed that the casualties in Nam were mostly off the east coast facilities and Westmoreland moved AIT INF out of Dix. Ended up at Ft. Polk. Good training in July/August (HOT) and nasty conditions for everything you had to do for where many were to end up. BCT should have been there too! Was sent back to Polk as an E6 and taught on a live fire range 4 years later. Conditions weren't much better. I'd like to go back and see what it looks like now....
