Its both and as long as you aren't trying to really hurt someone (and be honest, you know the difference)it should be ok. We do it in the USAF all the time. Even our officers have started 'tacking on' their new ranks.

I never had it done but I saw it while I was in. It was all done in fun but I do remember a few soldiers needing to go to the TMC because the rank got stuck in their collarbones.

You Tell Me.

With that said, how is securing the rank on someone's chest with a swift love tap hazing, but the Navy's Shellback Ceremony is Tradition?

In my opinion, it all depends on how hard you actually hit the person. When I pinned on PV2, my former NCO lightly hit me on the chest and congratulated me. No harm done. Of course, on the other hand, if you purposely strike a person with all you've got, then yeah, thats hazing.

Curious with the new requirement to sew on rank and skill badges, how will this tradition carry forward?

I had my rank pounded in. I think it's a very good tradition that brings unity to the unit/section. I ran around with blood on my uniform all day from it.

I got my blood wings also. I had to beg for that. The Black Hats were told not to do it.

When I was in there was a tradition to "Tacking" on your Crow (Advancement to the various levels of NCO Petty Officer) Solid Punch in the Shoulder. It is a Tradition but I can see where it could also be considered Hazing when it is taken to extreme.

The Tacking / punching came about when the Nav shifted to the iron-on crows for the working uniform.

The "Blood Stripes" were on the USMC NCO Dress Blue Trousers. You went from having slick blue legs to Blood Stripes when you promoted to Corporal. You also went from everyone telling you to Shut Your Frigging Pie Hole, to Corporal, what is your opinion about......
