I was disheartened after reading this story. My state, my beloved Texas, also known for ... its racism. We've discussed racism on RP, this week, as a matter of fact. I never thought we would be discussing racism In Texas. Not that Texas is so great that racism wouldn't exist, but, I hate to see that it still does.

"The stars at night are big and bright/ Deep in the heart of Texas..."

Texas is an immensely popular state. It easily ranks high among the states in our union with an international profile. Texas boasts three of the fastest growing regions in America along with three of the ten most populous cities. The state's low cost of living along with its thriving business community is attracting new residents seeking fresh starts and new opportunities for success.

Last week, Sandra Bland made her southward odyssey to Texas to begin a new job that was awaiting her at her alma mater, one of Texas' most storied historically Black institutions of higher learning, Prairie View A&M University.

I think the guy who wrote this article is a little off of his rocker...yes, Texas has racism just as any other state does...and since Texas is way bigger than other states and we have way more people maybe that's why this guy feels it's more prevalent here.... Overall I believe most Texans are not racist....there are pockets of racism here and there. I think that before Trayvon Martin and Ferguson then Baltimore happened that racism was around, but not as prevalent, but with the likes of Sharpton, the black panthers and other like these folks...the egging on, the false statement and all of the race bating stirred a lot of people up that I do not believe would have reacted in such a manner as they did....ok, enough said otherwise I would ramble on forever. loll :-)

Sgt Kelli Mays, SN Victoria Glover, both of you are correct. After reading both of your comments, I feel like I'm promoting it by having this question on RP. My original intention was to make this guy look like an idiot. Now, I'm the idiot for having it on RP.

SGT (Join to see) - We all have our opinions. That is what RP is about is to share them regardless. You only posted a simple question. You are not actively out there race baiting and promoting it. The writer of that article did what they were gonna do. Which is to call into questions our actions to things.

I never have had any issues dealing with racism in this great state of Texas. I was born and raised and Texas and been all over the state and everywhere I went I always received good Ole southern hospitality.

Racism is alive and well all over it isn't just Texas and it would be wrong for me to put that label on the Lone Star State it is a person choice to be that way, when we know right from wrong we're obligated to do better.

MSgt Ronald Stacy - I'm truly sorry that you are being rejected the church I attend all are welcome "Everybody Is Somebody." I can't speak for other people, but if you are around me and my family you won't experience that kind of ignorance. We aren't perfect in no kind of way, but we strive to obey God's Commandment to love our neighbor as we do ourselves even the ones who are unlovable. Is it hard? Yes, it is but with God it isn't impossible, and I don't believe God is saying to let anyone walk on you.

The honest and sad truth is racism is alive and well everywhere, not just Texas, the South, or even America. It's everywhere. Many nations big and small. And not just race, but religion, poverty, wealth, education. White collar, blue colla, the disdain is everywhere. Someday we will all have to come together as one great peoples or we will destroy ourselves in the process, both physically and personally. We lose ourselves in the inequalities and injustices. It's not a racial thing, it's a human one.

yep. It's everywhere. There are racists in many countries that are racist against their own race depending on their status.

I don't think Texas is any worse than other states having racial tensions. Our problem stems from illegal immigrants pouring across our borders and the people protecting them are clearly overwhelmed.

SSG Ryan R., Racial tensions against Mexicans crossing our borders is only a small percentage of the racism that exists elsewhere in Texas. In deep East Texas, near Louisiana, is a completely different story than from our west and south Texas borders.

I have been in Texas 20 years and have only met 1 racist person.
There are always jokes but they are for all races and in good fun.

Stereotypes are proven wrong in Texas. I have friends who happen to be black and Mexican who are Cowboys, love to Bass fish, hunt and do all the same things the rest of us enjoy.

I think Texas breakers the stereotypes once you get out of the big cities.

SGT Joe Sabedra, It really depends on where you live or visit in Texas. You wouldn't want to go to the Piney Woods and talk about how great black people are. You wouldn't want to go somewhere in Texas, say like Austin, Dallas, or Plano and tell racist jokes. If you did it in the Piney Woods, and you said it to the wrong white person, you might never be seen again. I had a deer lease in the Piney Woods, and those people are so racist, and corrupted, State game wardens won't go in there anymore. Two did, and they were never heard of again. I had a lease in the hill country and one of my two hunting buddies is black. We rented a cottage, and were there about a week. As I was paying the lady who owned the cottage, she asked me if the "darky" with us hunted with us. I said oh no ma'am. He cooks for us, cleans the deer, and washes our clothes. She said well I didn't think you would let him hunt with you. I told my friend, Floyd, and we all had a good laugh.
