Sons of Confederate Veterans has organizations across the southern states. Members pay extra to the states for the special license plates. But now Virginia has decided to remove the confederate flag from that plate. I can understand and agree with removing confederate flags from statehouses, but I wonder if this isgoing too far. This seems to be tampering with a legal organization's logo. It isn't just a random flag. What do you think?

ALCON,

The flag is not a hate symbol but heritage.... to some. For others it is a symbol of an oppressive system from a bygone era. Let these individuals have their flags. Freedom of expression. The Klan used to put up a cross down town at the fountain square where I am from for Christmas and I really did not care. It was only when I had gotten older that I truly understood and learned what that was about. I used to watch Dukes of Hazard and had thought that the Confederate Flag was the coolest flag ever because of the car; until again I had learned what it was really about. But again in conclusion let the flags stay and keep Fort Bragg ...Fort Bragg.

CH (MAJ) William Beaver Don't you love it when politicians make knee jerk reactions when something comes up across the news airwaves. It didn't seem to bother the state of Virginia before, why now.

Sir, last week the Supreme Court ruled that States may remove confederate flags. But to me, this dishonors veterans. They were confederate veterans but they were OUR confederate veterans. Don't change the SCV's logo. I can't stand white supremists, but I am serving in the Army to defend their rights to peacably gather and to display their confederate and (sigh) nazi flags. I don't want a police state.

And I do not equate SCV with white supremists. I should have clarified that

CH (MAJ) William Beaver I agree that we shouldn't make political moves against anything that has something to do with our history and veterans. Whether we have relatives that were on the Union side or on the Confederate side they were Americans and they fought for their beliefs. I'm tired of the media coverage on the Confederate Flag because of the crime committed by deranged individual - get back to the reason. The flag didn't make him do it - we wouldn't start burning or removing the American Flag when other criminals have committed these types of acts.

I believe that it should be what the flag originally stood for. state rights. I believe that each state should be allowed to decide if the SCV should be mandatory on every license plate or if each individual driver has the right to have it on or off their plate.

CH (MAJ) William Beaver I think this is line with what I said in other posts... I think PCness, energized by recent events will eventually cause all vestiges of this flag/symbol to be gone from all places but museums. I do not think it is too far, but I am from NJ.

I do think that it is an overreaction, however as was determined in a recent Texas ruling, the states do have the right to ban the display of objectionable material on items designed/issued by the state itself. I have some good friends that are members of the SCV, that put on reenactments and camps throughout GA in an effort to reinforce the history of our nation, not just the Confederacy, I find it disheartening and disappointing that states that had only "yesterday" had no issue with the plates, not to mention the extra $ it generated in revenue, now deem it inappropriate for a historical society to display a part of their heritage. Alas though, it is what it is......

I can understand removing the image of the flag off of the plate, but not the, "Sons of the Confederate Veterans," from the bottom. IF you want to display the flag (any flag) buy a bumper sticker or an actual flag.

I don't think "Sons of the Confederate Veterans" is being removed from the plate, just the Confederate Battle Flag.

I believe there was a recent Federal Court ruling in regards to this in TX.

Didn't it fall under State Controlled or something like that? Since the tag is manufactured by the state and seen by a lot of people, the state can control what is placed on them. I can understand this premise.

MSgt (Join to see) It was classified as "Government speech" as opposed to "Individual Speech" which means that the Protections were weighed more leniently.

The government doesn't have to allow itself to Speak Freely is the "feeling" I got from the reading.

Ironically, the current Virginia State Flag is the same as was adopted in 1861 after secession.
