State TV showed footage of Thursday's strikes, including one that set off a large ball of fire after impact. It showed two pilots scribbling messages in chalk on the missiles.

"For you, the enemies of Islam," read one message.

The military said all targets were destroyed. The announcement did not say whether the strikes where carried out against Islamic State positions in Syria or Iraq. The IS militants control about one-third of each country.

Increased air strikes and Muslim countries willing to step up are a good start. Let's not kid ourselves though. Air strikes by themselves will not turn the tide against ISIS although they will produce some tactical effects and some great video for the evening news. ISIS has already adapted to the tactic.

You are right COL Smallfield, while this is good for a counter propaganda message; airstrikes do not take ground. there is a dire need for a ground fighting force to be employed against this threat. the big question is where will it come from and who will lead it? There is too many political variables and obstacles currently in place for anybody to step up and answer this call. I would imagine that we will continue to push others to take the lead and strengthen CT capabilities of anybody willing to take on this action. This threat has spread to Egypt, Libya and rumors now fly about ISIS getting a foothold in Afghanistan at a time when the international community continues its drawdown. While it may seem an instantaneous gratification of pulling out of Afghanistan, I fear these actions will eventually come back to haunt us.
