Millennials support 'boots on the ground' to fight ISIS, but not necessarily their 'boots'. Is this survey surprising to you?

The institute has asked millennials about the idea of American boots on the ground at three different times this year, and the survey results have fluctuated somewhat, but there seems to be a "hardening of support." In this most recent survey, 60 percent of the 18- to 29-year-olds polled say they support committing U.S. combat troops to fight ISIS. But an almost equal number (62 percent) say they wouldn't want to personally join the fight, even if the U.S. needed additional troops. The disconnect in joining the fight comes down to how millennials feel about the government writ large, according to Harvard IOP Polling Director John Della Volpe. "I'm reminded of the significant degree of distrust that this generation has about all things related to government," said Della Volpe. "And I believe if young people had a better relationship with government ... they'd be more open to serving."

Reportedly 60% support boots on the ground, but 62% wouldn't want to personally joint the fight.
So does that mean the other 32% would personally join the fight if needed? Or did the survey have other options like not comment?
It would be interesting to know what percentage responded that they would be willing to join the fight if needed. I trust that the number willing to serve, although not a high percentage might well be more than enough. After all like marines always say they only need A FEW GOOD MEN. Likewise the Army, Navy and Air Force would only want good men and women in their ranks.

Sp4 Byron Skinner. The answer to the question is not surprising in the least. But I think a better question might be: Do you support fighting Radical Islam even trout it would add a 25% non refundable war contingence surcharge to you income taxes?

Surprising, no not really, but it is sad. They want to commit the military to a costly ground war and then turn around and complain about the rising cost of the DoD and the rising cost wounded veteran care. They let their Representatives and Senators cut the military and their budgets to the bone in some cases and expect us to be happy about it. Some even have the nerve to say we deserve it because we were not "smart enough" to go to college and call the military a form of welfare when looking at our entitlements. Its just sad that we support and defend their sorry asses when they cannot do the same in return.

We have media beating a drum beat for war, even though no one can explain why Daesh (ISIS) poses a serious threat to the US. Sure every now and then a demented extremist or two decide that it's time to commit an act of terror, however the threat those individuals represent will never rise to the level of that caused by traffic accidents.

Last year 33,838 people died in traffic accidents... If the media focused on traffic accidents the way they do on terror we would all be driving around in giant bumper cars that couldn't travel more than 15 mph.

I saw a report that 18% of them are currently willing to serve. That seems reasonable to me.

The Survey I saw said they weren't interested and did not feel a vested interest. Guess we need either better or more Right Wing Propaganda to get them Properly Fired Up (Fortunately I think they can see through BS pretty good).

Kinda wonder the Parameters of the Survey (Got what the Surveyor wanted to hear but not the way he wanted to hear it) . I've seen how some of those surveys are worded.

SGT Francis Wright - I think you nailed it: ISIS needs to be destroyed but I'm not confident enough in this current government to help make that happen. If this is the reasoning, I can understand why millennials would feel this way.

No I don't think they buy all the FOX Propaganda either about "Leadership" of the Current Administration. I think their thinking is much more complex and nuanced. They exist in a world far different from yours. Most folks here aren't even keeping up with the current Media Trends that they monitor and use. FB is Ancient History, Google Plus Never Really Took Off, Pinterest still seems to be Popular and the Fad of Twitter is now Fading now that "Grandpa and Grandma and Crazy Uncle Earl that watches FOX" are now on Twitter. Of all the Media I try and stay up so I am mostly on Twitter anymore.
