Ah yes, we've all seen them; "so, there you were" in a theater or a room full of service members or veterans, one minute everything's ok, then all of a sudden there it is... the over-the-top military movie discrepancy! So, what was that moment that stands out most in your mind? What are those associated memories or stories that come to mind? Did the base theater erupt into 'chaos' over an unkempt/incorrect uniform, improper language/jargon/ customs, or was there something that was just plain 'unsat' from a military point-of-view. lol Well, there's a ton of them out there, and I'm pretty sure that something should immediately come to mind, so what are we waiting for? Quick, pull up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thanks for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

Most movies and their exaggerations have to be taken with a grain of salt. When it's represented as fact or based on a "true story" then it bothers me. The one that always gets my goat is when they say, "The Congressional Medal of Honor." There never has been and never will be such an award. It's simply The Medal of Honor. I think (really, I know) I get on my wife's nerves every time this gets mentioned in a movie. The Medal of Honor; attaching the politician's of Congress taints the bravery of the warriors who have been awarded it (and I said awarded, since no award is "won").

One of the movie discrepancies that really makes me grind my teeth is at the end of "Jarhead" when they are all partying and firing their weapons in the air. Yeah, like THAT would ever happen in a battle zone.

I agree live fire up in the air is pretty ridiculous - however I have some similar moments. Back in the 2000 timeframe when I was still Army we would bring WAY more blanks than we needed for every exercise. Somehow (I was never supply so I don't know how it actually worked) it was easier to turn in fired casing than unfired blanks. So the last day would turn into a giant ridiculous free-for all with everyone shooting absolutely every round they had left and whatever. It would turn into a last man standing (MILES gear kills) kind of thing.

TSgt (Join to see) - turning in un-fired blanks is extra work and most commanders don't want to unnecessarily annoy their supply sergeants so they will conduct a "waste ex" and just fire the stuff. I personally hated doing it because the M16/M4 is hard enough to clean when firing live rounds.

There is a movie Called by Dawn's Early Light. The entire movie takes place on a B-52 and in one scent they open a file cabinet to get the launch codes and in another there is a knockdown drag-out bar-room style fight downstairs (which is smaller than most cubicles)

We watched that terrible movie "The Green Zone" once while deployed in Afghanistan. There was a general towards the beginning of the movie who was wearing our patch, the 75th Fires Brigade. The only problem was that he was wearing it upside down... I guess it isn't over the top stupid, but we all got a good laugh out of it at least. That was probably the most entertaining part of the whole movie!

I remember the 75th FA Bde from Ft. Sill. One thing the Green Zone got spot on was that blue domed palace with the pool.

In Olympus has fallen when they punched flare and it came out like it would at a fricken air show or something. More than that the patriot missile bit off on the flares! haha.

I think it would be harder to name a movie without a goof. I understand that they cannot be 100% accurate because of budget and "Drama", but at least hire someone who's been there and done that.

I will mention one TV show that got everything right, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. That show is text book perfect concerning uniform wear.

History channel did a series on WWII recently. In the episode on D-day, they showed stock footage in black and white of C-130s doing personnel drops while the narrator talked about the airborne assault behind the beaches on June 5-6, 1944. D-day airdrops were done by C-47s mostly. C-130 first joined the Air Force about 1956. Really disappointing for the History Channel to make such a gaff.

Also, numerous movies where the sound effects for aircraft are all wrong. Prop planes making jet noises, etc.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, to uniform inaccuracies. I write those off as just lack of attention to technical details by Hollywood types who don't really care.

History channel has some "documentaries" with egregious errors.

Hollywood's formula for writing a war movie, is a pain. With few accepting they change the war and the uniforms, but retell the same story over and over again---Soldiers who disobey incompetent officers, sadistic Sergeants, a main character that deserts because of war crimes he's committed, or witnessed and remained silent about---The main character will go home--become an alcoholic or drug addict and kill himself in the end. If they want to put a twist on it they'll have him kill his entire family, and then kill himself. I can never understand why anyone would spend millions making these stink bomb, no one goes to see. I guess the directors want to re-live their rebellious youth of the 60's. Even if they didn't have a rebellious youth.
It's all like going to see a Spike Lee movie. Before you walk into the theater you already know how it's going to end---Everyone dies or goes to prison.

Don't see any mention of "Full Metal Jacket". Always wondered how the recruit, got a weapon into the head, and who left ammunition for him to use? Then the journalist ends up walking patrol at night with Grunts in Hue? I don't think so. Will give them credit for using the Rifle Creed in the barracks, although we slept in Quonset Huts in San Diego in 1963.
And then there is "Heartbreak Ridge", Eastwood's character is assigned to Camp Lejuene and is obviously a Camp Talega on MCB Camp Pendleton. If the desert fauna don't give it away, the Quonset Huts do. And the character with an earring is just wrong, especially in recon.

Yeah, I walked out on that one about the time the guy went off and killed everybody. Total BS. The only time I got near a live weapon in navy boot camp was when we went to the range. Even then, we were using blanks.
