I know many people may not have seen it, but Taking Chance. Its about a Marine colonel whom takes on the duty to escort a soldier to his final resting place... was pretty moving. And by many accounts pretty spot on, especially the guys I work with that worked C-17's say people are very solemn around one of our fallen.

Hurt Locker was not good at all. Hang your head in shame.
My vote is for Restrepo unless a documentary doesn't count.

Restrepo is Awesome. And still... difficult to watch. I had to break it up into three parts over three days the first time.

LTC (Join to see) I have not been able to bring myself to watch that movie. I have heard nothing but good things about the film.

First, you have to define what you mean by the 'real deal'. We were soldiers was pretty good, in my opinion, and that of my Vietnam era buddy that came out really shook up...sorry Bear. The sad part, if you read the book, this was our 'good' day in the bigger battle.

I don't know about the entire movie, but the Boot Camp segment of Full Metal Jacket was pretty realistic.
I also think Platoon may rank high.
Im surprised no one mentioned "Pearl Harbor" yet

To quote lyrics from Team America: World police, Pearl Harbor sucked, and Ben Affleck needs acting school. My top 5 war movies would be: We were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down, Bravo Two Zero, Saving Private Ryan, and Braveheart.

Parts of "Platoon" for me was the most realistic, especially the night perimeter guard scene, talk about flash backs!

I think my college buddy Bob was the model for Bunny. When he was giving the reasons why he liked it in Vietnam, I had heard the almost identical speech from Bob (who spent most of three tours before he was wounded bad enough to put him out of the Army).

CPT Lawrence Cable-Appreciate the feedback Sir,on this very old post, for the most part this movie (Platoon) wasn’t like my experiences in Vietnam, heavy drug use, major battles, mine were less Hollywood,a lot of trampling through the jungle, snipers, booby traps, small quick engagements on contact, mortars, characters we did have ,would take me many posts for those, many,be well Brother.

Hollywood sure picks the "beautiful people" to portray the real characters. Mine would look like Peter Griffin from "Family Guy."

Hurt Locker? Really? I haven't seen Lone Survivor so I can't speak on it's authenticity, but Hurt Locker was in no way shape or form realistic. From what I've seen the most realistic military related media that isn't a documentary is the Generation Kill miniseries. I would also assume that Band of Brothers and The Pacific are pretty high up there, but I obviously wasn't around during WWII.

YOU DONT GET MORE REAL THAN THE MOVIE SAVING PVT RYAN WITHOUT ACTUALLY ASSAULTING THE NORMANDY BEACH HEAD JUNE 6 1944 DURING WW2...THAT MOVIE PUT THEM OLD VETS RIGHT BACK INTO THE HORROR OF THEIR YOUTH...MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM AND MAKE THEIR STAY IN THE AFTER LIFE EASY, FOR THEY DESERVE IT....

I really liked the Generation Kill Miniseries too. I'm not a Marine so I can't say how authentic it is in that regard but they did a good job overall. Nothing stood out glaringly wrong for me.

I visited Normandy last year for the 75th Anniversary of D Day as one of the Former Rangers that were invited to attend and our respects to and honor those that came before us 75 years prior and climbed the cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc , it was a life changing trip for me to do so as well as standing on the center of Omaha Beach in the water staring at the machine gun emplacements with my fellow Rangers that had made this trip along with our wives . Truly impactful SSG Maurice P.
