My CSM wants me to be a door gunner for our deployment, but I've told him I'm colorblind. Is there a way around it for my flight physical?

I may not know enough about this but what does being colorblind have to do with being a door gunner? If your condition didn't keep you from enlisting, why would it keep you from this?
*Oh, and why would not want such an awesome job? Personally, I would lean toward NOT disclosing a condition that would prevent me from being a door gunner. But to each his own.

I really want to be a door gunner, my AIT instructor told me it's damn near impossible for my mos but for the flight physical I need to pass the red green color test.

SSG (Join to see) - Oh, I gotcha. If you need to pass the red/green test and you're red/green color blind, then I'm guessing you won't pass the physical. But if the CSM tells you to do it, go do it and give it your best shot. If they disqualify you then it's on them and he shouldn't be mad at you about it.

If they need window lickers that bad and your CSM wants you to do it badly enough, he'll make a waiver happen.

Seeing how your MOS if flight ops, you won't be doing anything else that is remotely close to being a Door Gunner. wether it's for a 60, or a 47 I'd take it. Trust me I'm a 15R, and I'm highly jealous I can't become a door gunner. Trust me take it.

I really want it but for my flight physical I'd have to pass the color vision test for green and red and I didn't pass it at meps when I first came in.

I mean that's between him and the flight surgeon. If he's along If you want to be a door gunner chances are he is short crew chiefs. I mean personally not quite sure what being color blind and shooting people has to do with each other. It's not like you'd be doing maintenance on said aircraft

I know color blindness can keep you out of some MOS's like 92F and 92L but not sure why it would affect you being a door gunner???

It keeps me back from flight, I'm honestly unsure why but it's part of the flight physical that I need to pass the color vision test for red and green.

SSG (Join to see) - I understand the situation and maybe your CSM can pull some strings. If he isn't putting you in a specific slot like crew chief, they may let it slide. Good luck.

"Color vision is required to accurately identify warning lights. Color visual displays in the cockpit, external visual cues including airfield lighting, the Fresnel lens, aircraft formation lights and colored smoke or light signals are commonly used in military operations.
Interactions with other optical devices, such as laser protective visors, may compound the problem. While color vision deficiencies are largely congenital, some occur as a result of ocular disease and/or medication side effects. The US Air Force standard for pilot accession is COLOR NORMAL (no deficits found on screening) while the US Army and US Navy standard is for COLOR SAFE, translating to accepting those who may have some mild deficit, yet still pass the screening test algorithm (see the ATB, Color Vision Testing)."

For NRCMs it can be waived and the waivered individual would be required to fly with "color normal" crew chiefs.
