Some of the first women serving on submarines have been filmed while in the dressing area and showering over the past year. The Navy is still investigating the case and not many details have been released. The incident took place on USS Wyoming (Gold Crew).
So far the perpetrator has only been identified as a second class petty officer (E-5) who works at the Trident Refit Facility at Kings Bay, GA.
There were at least three female officer victims. More details below in the Navy Times article.

CMDCM Gene Treants Master Chief, I've got to say that as a submarine "A" school student (one hoping for orders to a Trident boat, not less!) I am really discouraged by this. What is most disheartening, honestly, is the fact that I know people who see this happen and their conclusion is, "See? Women shouldn't be on submarines," as if it were somehow her fault for one of her shipmates sexually assaulting her. This is unacceptable.
Though, what is a little encouraging is, despite what I just said, there are a hundred times more people here at Sub School who are absolutely sickened and angry that there's a guy on one of the boats who would do this and wouldn't stand for it if it were on our boat.

I thought I responded to this, but it seems to be missing so,here it is again.
You and most of the people at school with you have the attitudes needed to effectively change the Navy and bring it into this century. When I was at Sub School it was unheard of to even consider that women would ever serve on ships, let alone boats. However, even back then, we would never have blamed a victim for being taken advantage of when she was humiliated or assaulted.
I agree that is what happens when some foolish person makes a statement like, "See? Women shouldn't be on submarines." That person and everyone who agrees, is part of the problem and needs to either wake up or leave the Navy. There is just no place in our service for that attitude. Thanks for pointing it out.

I have little doubt it did there and a few other places. Was it reported there? If so, what happened?

The women had to always be in pairs and we were issued raps whistles. I have been to combat a few times and learned to keep my knife out and to maintain situational awareness. And the treat was from U.S. troops and not allied or Afghan forces.

When I was in the MN ARNG, I was in an integrated Attack Helicopter Bn. We were at Camp Ripley, MN for annual training. Our section was tasked to conduct some repairs on the AH-1S back at the hanger and then return to the field. Repair took longer than expected and a nasty fog rolled in. We could not see to get back out to the bivouac site to get some sleep. Instead, we notified our command and stayed in the barracks for the night. The one female soldier that was with us ended up staying in our barracks bay so she wouldn't have to be the only one on the female barracks. She was afraid that someone would walk into the female barracks and rape her. We went out of our way to ensure that she had her privacy by posting a guard outside of the male latrine while she was using it and letting her sleep in a bunk in the same open bay, but separated from our bunks by several open bunks. We never told our command that we did this, because we male soldiers felt that we would be reprimanded even though we were doing our best to protect one of our own (this was back in the 1990's). She was and is perfectly capable of pulling her own weight in the field and is no "shrinking violet," but is an equal and valued member of our unit.

SSG(P) Matthew Bisbee Amen brother that is the way we would have treated any other soldier. Of course posting a guard when using the head - well maybe not - but I see it as a need if it was a large base. Protection from outsiders and not taking advantage of our own sisters is what I expect and you provided.

Other male service members used the same latrine, so we saw it as a necessity. My view is, treat other service members as you would treat your brother or sister, because that is what they are!

That's why sexual harassment is on the rise, and these crooks in uniforms are not really deserving to serve for even their comrades in arms they are like wolves preying on women. I don't see why this person did it he probably a pervert and he thought he cannot be caught. Shame on you take off that uniform and leave the service!

I fully agree SSG (Join to see) this jerk does not deserve to be in uniform. Hopefully he will be a Registered SexOffended when convicted.

SSG(P) (Join to see) I don't think they were ACTING. This is as smart and mature as they get.

This seems to be a contemporary problem in the military. It wasn't to long ago that we had the Tailhook scandal.Military is doing a poor job in this arena

I realize Combat Arms is a relatively new idea for the US Military, but we need to take lessons from some or our allies. If we cannot do that then we need to wake up and get into the 20th century at least.

Surreptitious spying is wrong whether clothed or not. We are subject to it by our very own government. It is a breech of trust. When done for sexual purposes it escalates the tension and mistrust. I have personally experienced situations where coed showers and bathrooms were created by default. In Nurnberg Germany our artillery unit shared barracks with postal and cooks. One floor shared latrines for men and women. There was only one latrine with hours for each sex. Bladders were not always cooperative with the schedule nor were work requirements so it ended up just being coed. It was an open floor shower men and women showered next to each other in plain view. There were no problems and the same scenario was common with the German people as well.
The other time was in Korea. We shared a single rest room between two rooms with adjoining doors. I had my own room and two women shared the other. Their bladders did not cooperate either and would knock furiously if was in the shower and the door was locked. The shower curtain was closed and it became a rule that if you shower or would take an extended time you didn't lock the door. We were close friends and they didn't care about the nudity so I certainly did not.

One of the biggest problems we have in the US is our hang up with bodily functions and the absolute need for privacy or at least single sex facilities. If we could get past that, then Incidents like this would be a thing of the past. I do not expect us to go to "Star Ship Troopers" in the next few years, but we sure need a new look at our hangups.
