Called my grandfather on the evening of 9 November 1989. Through the tears I could understand: "Unsere Familie wird man wieder sein!" Yes Opa, our family will be one again.

The assassination of JFK SCPO David Lockwood . I was in 2nd grade and didn't fully understand it; but, I saw upset the teacher and grownups were as were being sent home early.
The Iranian Hostage crisis, the sad news that Desert One Delta mission to extract the hostages from Iran] was aborted, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall all impacted me from afar.

Great question SCPO David Lockwood. I know it is selfish compared to 9/11, but the first time I held my children made me so happy that I felt my heart would burst. I never felt such joy. Iraq had too many to remember, mostly bad (deaths), but some were good. I remember meeting soldiers from past units I haven't seen in a long time. I was unable to be with my grandma when she passed at 100. I talked with her on the phone and she told me goodbye. That will stay with me until we meet again.

Holding your kids for the first time is a great feeling. I was fortunately to be there when both my kids and grandkids were born. Sorry for your loss. It's hard not being able to be there, my grandmother past when I was flying to Japan for duty.

The shooting down of a South Korean passenger airliner by the Soviet Union in 1983. I was aboard ship heading back to Okinowa Japan having just left Korea while in the Marine Corps.

Knew Dave up on Adak. He was a Flight Surgeon who with other medical types were hosted at our house all the time. We got to be named the COMO Annex. Dave was single, loved dogs, and would put on clown makeup, juggle, and ride a unicycle for the kids. We knew him best in the 83-85 time frame. He was going to be an astronaut then and nobody doubted he'd do it mostly because there wasn't a big ego attached to it. He just chased his dream. We lost touch with him after but would follow him in the news.

I think it really depends on when you were born. For some people, they may not have known about the Challenger disaster or things like that. The attacks on 9/11 was really the modern day version of when JFK was killed. Prior to 9/11, most people referred to that day in Texas as the day they will never forget. I hope we don't have another day like that any time soon.

I was a senior in HS when the Challenger blew up. We were all watching it live. I'm glad I didn't have to endure the Kennedy assassination. My grandma lived 100 years. Talk abut some stories to tell. Titanic, WWI, WWII, adding states to the flag, moon landing, horse to car transitions, etc.

SFC Mark Merino - That's funny, I was in HS too and watching it live when it blew. And yeah, the things your Grandma saw...phew. Imagine what you'll see if you live to 100.
