Option D: It's not an eagle, it's a chicken, and it's not screaming it is in fact choking. On what, you'd have to ask the 82nd ABN. I'm certain they'd be able to guide you to the exact anatomical region.

I actually believe that you are all wrong. I believe it because he was reading the posting by 1LT Eric Rosa and did not care if a 2LT should salute a 1LT when in the field.

D - The history of the patch and why the 101st is referred to as the Screaming Eagles goes back to the 1800s. When Capt John E Perkins purchased an eagle from Daniel McCann that was saved by an Indian who later traded it to McCann, Perkins took the bird back to his unit and from then on the unit was referred to as "Eau Claire Eagle. This mascot was later adopted by the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment when Perkins' unit joined that Regiment. The eagle was later given the name of "Old Abe". After surviving several engagements, Old Abe passed away following a fire near his aviary.

Since 1921 "Old Abe" has served as the insignia of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

E) it didn't like getting shot at. The eagle was designed after "Old Abe", the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteers. Old Abe accompanied the unit into combat, and was said to squak very loudly when taking incoming fire from the Rebs.... ;o)

It's actually a little of all three. If you've ever heard an eagle it sounds something like a scream. Especially when their diving in on prey
