I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?
"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

Most definitely; however, it shouldn't go to the 1LTs head. They will be peers in just a few years ;) As CPT's, MAJ's and so on...its a military bearing issue. Not a power and subordinate issue. I remember in most of the schools I have been in an emphasis on leaders are good followers too ;) Understand your operational environment and be humble...you expect your CW5 to salute a 2LT; if that shoe fits, no issues right ;)

I can't say that being a 1LT would be a position of power but my new duty position as the Supreme Allied Commander of the Nihility Forces is something that I feel one may abuse if they are not careful.

Well, let me ask you this 1LT. Should a 1LT salute a CPT? Should a CPT salute a MAJ? so on and so on. YES a lower ranking officer should salute a higher rank. Asalute is a sign of respect for the rank.

Yes A second LT is lower rank to a 1st LT so yes 2nd LT have to salute 1 st LT as per militarey customs and the UCMJ

Honestly why is this a question the regulations say to salute and as leaders we enforce the standards. It's not if you should or shouldn't it's will I enforce the standard. I personally still salute even when the officer says it isn't necessary because it is what is called for irregardless of my personal feeling.

1LT(P) Michael Barden What I was pointing out is pretty much a clinch in the matrix and would almost never occur.

I do believe it also does apply to officers as it does not state for those who approach an officer.

It's just the wording out of the regulation MAJ Carl Ballinger nothing I have added or interpreted on my own this time. :)
b. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute

The real question is...Is a 2nd Lieutenant really an Officer? Discuss :-)

As long as they are doing what the PLT SGT is telling them, then yes, they can be an officer.

Sorry, True story, I was in Baumholder Germany in 1974, I was an 11 B, I was walking down the street and a female 2nd Lieutenant approached, I walked right by (I had never seen a female officer other than at the hospital), she turned and asked Sergeant, don't you salute officers? I told her only Majors and above on Thursdays..That cost me a trip to the Bn Cmdrs Office

Prior to SNCO rank then yes they are, once you reach NCO that is debatable. As I shared earlier my Gunny sure did not look at an O-1 as an officer but he sure did respect an O-2. Of course I only made it to E-4 so I made sure to recognize them as an officer.

My personal opinion is that the salute should be earned. As in company grade officers and senior NCOs, they've all been in long enough to truly earn the respect of all enlisted and commissioned members. I find it odd seeing an E8 saluting a newly commissioned officer...that's not to say I don't follow the regs, just an opinion

Oh yea, I totally understand. But I find it kinda disrespectful myself for someone who had been in for 20 years having to salute one who has been in for 2, but like we said, rules are rules.

yeah, but if the one who's been in for 20 years works for the one who's been in for 2, and he screws up, the one who's been in for 2 has the responsibility.

You aren't wrong, but than again, why should a the 2 year be in charge of the 20 year? I understand the officers go through leadership course and like that, but the 20 years of experience should de more than enough to earn a salute from a 2 year commissioned officer. Im not saying that the system is wrong, this is all just opinion and discussion, and i just like to throw in different possibilities

MAJ Carl Ballinger, sorry for the late response, work has been a little busy for me. I understand what you're saying here, i guess this got a little off topic. Earlier i said something about only saluting company grade officers and SNCOs, as they have truly earned the respect! But, thank for shining different light onto the leadership part of it!
