I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?

"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

Should a first lieutenant salute a captain? Should have Captain salute a major? The answer to both of those questions are yes not to do so would be at risk of showing disrespect to a superior officer which is a crime under the uniform code of military Justice. This is why your first sergeant and a sergeant major will both salute a second lieutenant failure to do so not only sets a bad example but it is a crime.

Dude, you should really look at the MCM. It is not a crime, it is a breach of protocol. Your NCOs have definitely failed you if you really think this is a "crime."

The answer is YES, regardless of the rank structure. A salute as it has been correctly described is more about showing respect to a fellow warrior than it is about rank. Knights saluted each other before battle as a sign of respect between professional military. You may not respect the individual for whatever reason, BUT I believe you MUST respect the person that raised their hand and pledge the oath. In one of my last TDYs I went to Lackland AFB and walking towards the BX when a young basic trainee decided that the rank in my lapels looked like that of an officer. I returned the salute and stop the young troop and explained that my lapel rank was that of a SNCO and not an officer, but I did thank him for the respect.

As a 2LT I always saluted 1LTs but I didn't enforce it as a 1LT. I don't think it is necessary. The way I saw it was that we were both LTs. But there were those 1LTs that enforced it. The way I see it is if a 1LT enforces that to a 2LT then they have an issue with how important they think they are. I think a better question is should privates stand at ease for specialists?

Sir, do you demand respect for your position? Or do you demand respect for your rank. This is something only you can answer. Should the 2LT salute you as a 1LT? Let me advance this 8 years in your timeline - should the LTC salute you as a COL? You are both Colonel right, and addressed as such. Spoken by a true officer. Think about it. PVT to SPC is BS by comparison.

Saluting is a common military courtesy to ALL ranks................. However it has been determined that saluting targets Senior people. I don't thing that saluting is a viable greeting anymore, even in the US, under todays' threats. I DO believe, and practice a simple spoken recognition of the senior that I may encounter. We must evolve to the current threats.

You have to pick your environment. You are too generalizing.

I and my fellow butter bar were at a training squadron on Goodfellow AFB and saluted our instructor, a prior enlisted 1LT. He barked at me, “Lieutenants DO NOT salute each other.”

He was wrong according to regulations, and needed to be corrected. Especially since he was senior. Does a COL not demand the salute of a LTC? They are both addressed as
Colonel. Is there a difference?

By the letter of regulations, yes, they should. When I was a 2LT and 1LT Mid 80's to early 90's, 2LT's normally did not salute 1LT's. However, if the 1LT was a unit commander, the, yes. 2LT's also did not call 1LT's Sir.

Position does matter, and good on you for identifying this. While I dont see a 2LT as a commander while a 1LT was the XO, I suppose this could be a possibility. I was an E* Commander by orders, and rightfully expected a salute based on position as opposed to rank.

The same would be equally true among Lt Colonels and Lt Generals.

I don't see anyone asking if a LTC should salute a COL -- or even if a 1LT should salute a CPT.

Mind the military bearing. The officers blue book or default to rank if uncertain. We work in a joint service world so let's quash the debate since there really is no debate at field grade . You think...

Ok, Bn commander, I am not going to salute you, only the BDE commander. How do you now feel. You are both Colonel's and demand to be addresses as such. Isnt this the same as 1LTs and 2LTs? yeah, I thought so. Ok, make the argument about responsibility level, make the argument about how hard you had it compared to the COL. I can debunk all of them. I was both an enlisted PL (by doctrine) and CO CDR (by doctrine), and never demanded a salute unless it was by doctrine by military manuals.

Let me further educate you. I was a fully ordered under UCMJ and AR 600-10 commander of a unit. In every way shape and form according to regulations I was a Company commander. Yet I was a 1SG, under assumption of command orders. Should LTs, both 1LT and 2LT, have saluted me?

This is a question that only an Army lieutenant could ask -- and only in today's snowflake officer corps.
Would you ask if a 2LT should salute another 2LT? Or if a General should salute another General?

Position as opposed to rank, yes. Why do you salute tour 1SG each morning during first formation?
