I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?
"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

Suck it up and drive on...
LOL - a Lt is a Lt. So that would mean a LTC and a COL = LOL.

all lesser ranks should salute senior ranks to show continuity and professionalism.

Upon further reflection, I was left with a question: who really pays attention to what lieutenants do?

Rank (read: responsibility) and little knowledge or experience to use it effectively!
I have great sympathy for the butterbars who truly want to do a good job. Hopefully they have a strong senior NCO to guide them in the correct direction.

I had a little experience as I made SPC before I hit OCS, but I had a few weak NCOs and less-than-effective senior officer mentors for the first bit of my time as a "Looie." However, with a stint as a HHC XO, a Rear Det Commander, and finally deployment with a company with strong PSGs, a combat-arms 1SG and a go-getting motivating CO, I finally figured out how to LT.
Then I got out of the military. :)

Well of course they should, but we all know that a Sergeant Major doesn't salute an LT, correct? Good, I'm glad we are all clear on this subject now. Carry on...

In a sense yes but don't you think some commands are reserved for the best and the brightest. Usually Scout PL is reserved for the strongest tactical PL that you have. One is not going to fall into that position without a strong background.

MAJ Carl Ballinger Looking at this yet another why would be a second command. In a infantry battalion the Scout PL is the senior PL and is assigned after a completion of your first Platoon command. Even yet in there should be a succession of command. Shouldn't one of the PL's be in line after the XO? In this case wouldn't this make him senior to the other PL's? These should be the same in the Guard and the Active side.

CPT Michael Barden They reason I argue so much for this topic is so more and more will be sucked into this void. It is a guilty pleasure to keep this going. I know I will never change MAJ Carl Ballinger. To be honest it doesn't matter. This will not break the Army. But I have already got what I wanted out of this. I have gained the perspective of those in the Army at all levels. But if I don't keep this up MAJ Ballinger will no longer have a place to go and counter some LT. We all have our purpose. I will go on to fight the good fight knowing that it will never be over.

CPT (Join to see) - and CPT Michael Barden I know this topic is a bit dated by now, but in regards to O-4 Command Billets, all MEDEVAC companies in Aviation are commanded by Majors as well as all Operational Support Airlift (OSA) units.

I have no input (except the eye roll that you can't see). I'm simply responding to make this an even 600 responses.

2LT Jasmine Meister, Down votes are traditionally accompanied by an explanation. You may have even noticed the pop-up. Would you care to share?

And you as well, 2LT Jasmine Meister. No problem on the vote either way. I simply ask any time I get one in case I have inadvertently offended someone. Welcome to RP. I'm sure you'll like it. It's a great community.

You are just egging it on. Maybe I might take home another award for this discussion. I might even make a run for the triple double.

I did receive an award for this question at the rally point conference. I think it might get another one for it.

No. Lieutenants are lieutenants. They need to work together regardless of how long they've been lieutenants as peers. That is how they learn from each other. If you allow 1LTs to hold rank over 2LTs, it promotes elitism. Have you ever seen a 1LT that is a dick, and isn't supported at all whatsoever by his Soldiers? Why would you want him bossing around a 2LT who is developing and maturing.

Soldiers: a commission is a commission, a rank is a rank. A buck sergeant outranks a corporal. A 1LT outranks a 2LT--a key reason is supposed to be seasoning--time in service, time in grade. A 2LT learns to salute and accept his/her station in life as does a private. No one wants to be at the bottom rank forever; enlightened leaders allow them to make mistakes as privates and butterbars.

I too agree a rank is a rank. Being a Spec 4, the best thing is any officer out ranks me so a Salute is automatic. I've met many an officer and enlisted in my MOS and found that respect of a rank does not always mean the respect of a person. 2nd LT's are earning their respect as they are the promotion to 1st LT. Even more for their Captain's bars.
My Company CO's were WO1 James Kerfoot 83-84 at Ft Sill.
I 1st met him at the USAESOM at Little Creek VA while he was a SSG in the Band Masters class and CW2 Freddie Vinson 82-83.
Warrant Officers whether a WO1, or a CW4, it does not matter, is a rank of which the officer was once an NCO and understands both.
In most cases the respect earned is respect given from after the Salute. The Salute is respecting the rank in a glance
I took an oath on 05 Aug 1981. That oath is in place today.
As a 100% disabled Veteran, spinal, my MOS continues on sometimes a daily routine.
Thank you my Brothers and Sisters for your service for myself, my family and friends. We all appreciate your sacrifices for us.

I can't believe this is still an ongoing topic and how much of a hard-on Ballinger has for trying to make everyone see his senseless point. I would hate to have you as a leader Major, your soldiers must be confused as to what to do...what they were taught and understood until they came under your command or following your lead that could possibly, some day, put them in a position of being insubordinate because of your convoluted thinking. It would seem being an EOD Officer has really f'd up your reasoning and mind. God help those who work for you, poor bastards.

LMAO! Not arrogance, just making an observation based on the asinine comments that you spew. Sounds like I struck a nerve based on your response. Would you call out a Capt for not saluting you? I would guess so because you are an O-4 and they are an O-3. Oddly enough you say an O-1 should not salute an O-2. Hell, let's just do away with it altogether then nobody will get mixed messages from their "leaders". SMH

LOL...apparently so, Sir. I've seen several spin-off threads and even started one myself entitled "Should Privates salute Generals?"
