Should army and marines consolidate
Think objectively. Traditions, camaraderie aside. Both are somewhat similarly more combat-oriented than USN or USAF. Answer practically without putting down either one of them.

PS: Yes, some are taunting about USN and USAF consolidation or Air Force return to Army Air Corps. My take on that if it's practical, lessen bureaucracy, and make for a smoother communications pipeline amongst the DoD components, why not? Again, camaraderie and traditions aside for a min.

i would have to say no. due to the fact of pride, both have a long history of great service to the nation, we wouldn't consolidate the two one would just merge in to the other and we would just get rid of one of the branches. that would be the end result and that in my opinion would be an insult to those who served in either branch

Service pride and tradition aside, the two services have different missions. I vote no.

When a Marines, MEUSOC deploys We can put rounds down range almost anywhere in the world in six hours from the call. To include raids, noncombatant evacuation, ship reinforcement, pilot rescue, security for SF missions, etc. When the MEU shows up I had a helo co. the batl. could attack with helo infantry, rigid raider infantry, Amtrak infantry, tanks, and yes we can even jump in Anglico. We have SEALs and Force recon not mention helo gunships and trans port, artillery, navel guns and I'm sure I have left assets out. As a group we train exclusively with one another. We know each other by name and any Marine with a radio can call a fire mission that takes as long as time of flight of the round. We are masters of logistics we can go anywhere and fight any body for a good 3 months with no support and win. That is not some special part of the Marine Corps that is the Marine Corps.

Not really. I am not the man that I was 25 years ago. It took years for me to function somewhat like a civilian again. I enjoy working with young people and have influenced several to join the military. I tend not to play well with others so I much better off working for myself. So many old Jarheads stop in and we seat around and tell lies. It is a good time.

Keep them separate, but take away the air arm and the heavy stuff. Make them Marine infantry like they were intended.

But, I'm still waiting for the Air Force to come come back.

MSgt David Rollins - I like that one. I think I'll pass it along to my one nephew... I think he'll smile. He's Navy; and rides in one of those floating hotels.

We as a nation would lose to much capability that the USMC bring in their amphibious approach. I agree when some say it is an out dated form a assault, but we never know what skills we are going to be in need of in the future.

And yet, during Desert Storm, the treat of an amphibious landing kept at least 2 Iraqi divisions tied down near Basra while we were maneuvering west of Wadi al Batin to deliver a left hook to the Republican Guards. The Marines were the first in when we sent troops to Somalia, and they came by sea. The fact is that we can deliver an MEU anywhere in the world within days, while even the most agile Army brigade is still lacing up it's boots. And dare I ask? When was the last time we actually did a large scale delivery of Airborne to the battlefield in a combat jump? Is that also no longer a valid tactic? And then there is that whole aggressiveness thing.....

Define "large scale". We dropped the 173rd into northern Iraq.

Like dog fighting with "guns" was obsolete over Hanoi? So much so that there were no guns on the F4, and ACM was not taught until the kill ratio fell abysmally.
You can never tell what old is new again and ultimately useful.

LTC Paul Labrador - Division or larger. According to sources I read, 173rd put about 1000 troops in the drop zone. And they dropped in a secure area.

Hey I'm fine with that if it contributes to the overall country's battle [and bureaucratic] readiness

I would favor keeping all of the services intact! Each service has its own things that they excell at! Maybe we should consider considations of intra service bases. But keep each service separate in their current command and control functionality!
