Politicians on all sides have a long history of lying or covering up the truth to the public. It's a crime to lie to Congress, should it also be a crime for politicians to lie to us, the people who voted them into office? And if so, what should the punishment be?

In this day in age it has begun to be increasingly difficult to tell what is the truth and what is the lie. Between politicians fighting the media and them pushing back, and both sides crying foul on the other. Who do we trust? And is there a way for us fight back other than at the polls?

That idea had not occurred to me, but, by Jove, I think you've got something there. Maybe something along the lines of Contempt of Court, hit the pocketbook.

I do not think most politicians "lie" deliberately. I think they are just masters of spinning the facts to meet their agenda. I guess to accurately address this, we would have to have some examples.

Off the top of my head I can think of three instances where politicians lied to us.

Nixon: "I am not a crook" (that being generally speaking of course, he lied to the public A LOT about Watergate.

Clinton: "I did NOT have sexual relations to that woman!" In a public speech he made.

Trump: "I cannot release my taxes because I am being audited!" There is no such law, policy or rule about releasing ones taxes while being audited, he knew that.

Granted, 2 of the three lies are small potatoes comparatively speaking, but a lie is a lie regardless of it's content. Politicians NEED to be transparent because we have entrusted them not only with running our country, but with our lives and our way of life. We need to know that they have our best interests in mind and a lie undermines the trust that we give them. If someone is willing to lie about the small stuff, it just makes them more likely to lie about the big things as well.

Cpl Tom Surdi - You forgot 1) Read my lips, no new tax's, 2) “If you like your health-care plan, you can keep it” 3)“90 percent of the budget deficit is due to George W. Bush’s policies”
Politicians lie all the time it is their trade, good politicians last a matter of days when they are submerged ion the cesspool that is DC or they are forced out so business as usual can go on. The only real way to clean up is to dump them all, don't save a single one and build from the ground up no matter how bad we suffer while the new guys and gals get up to speed. You will also need to keep the old crew far away to prevent reinfection. Plus a few dozen of these below in the Congress, Senate and White house, 24x7 body guards that will watch over these vermin and dispense justice when they try to screw the people.

It should be treated a fraud. For example, if a contractor lies to you about the costs of a repair knowing full well that it is going to run much more, just to get the job. Then after starting and tearing things up, hits them with the additional costs. Same thing with a politician lying to us to get elected. Fraud is when you willingly lie to enrich yourself. Politicians almost always leave office much wealthier than before being elected.
