Should RallyPoint Web designer consider adding a Section in the Profile for Military Awards for both military personnel and civilian personnel?

Do you think RP members will be honest for the most part and only add those they actually received?
(or)
Do you think some RP members will add awards they didn't actually receive?
(or)
Do you think there is no need for another "love me" section on the profile?

Please vote and provide your thoughts?

No because I only have two medals (National Defense and Good Conduct )and a Sharpeshooters Badge which is not much to be proud of after 8 years of service So my point is those of us who were not in combat may feel less important than others here who were I recall wearing those two and standing next to other Marines with their rows of ribbons. And I knew I was not in the same league as those who were in heavy duty combat ..it got to the point where I didn't wear my medals or ribbons .

Bur am showing them now to make my case to not display our ribbon racks...

I'm in that boat with you. National Defense and Good Conduct medals with ribbons.
Expert M-14 rifle badge. Marksman M-16 rifle and .45 caliber pistol badge. I don't
qualify for the army service ribbon or the overseas service ribbon even though I
earned them both because they did not exist until 1981. The military has more
service ribbons to award today.

1SG (Join to see) - As an uninformed civilian, I agree with what you have said. Except for the Medal of Honor, which has most likely not been given to many who rightly deserved it, no one should feel that they are not worthy because they have received fewer awards than others. From my perspective most people who have served in the military are more worthy than those who haven't because they served. I realize having a rating system has its merits and in many situations those awards have great meaning, but having a ribbon showing that one served during Operation XXX could mean one was in a computer room at Gunter AFB or deep in some undisclosed place that no one can ever mention eliminating a playing card few will ever know about coming home under cover of dark to no ceremonies.

It must be difficult in a culture that's so based on merit, honor, hierarchy, to have fewer awards than others who have so many. People with more "status" tend often to be snobs and let those with lesser status know they are somehow superior to them, which causes others to not only feel uncomfortable, but to not be as open in making suggestions or being honest with their opinions. That limits the exchange of good ideas, problem solving and teamwork, which hurts the leadership process. Anyone who made you feel this way was immature and not well trained. It wasn't about you, it was about them.

I understand how this could just be another part of the profile. I would say leave the option there for people to choose if they want to showcase their ribbons or not. But don't make it a requirement to bring your profile to 100% completion if you don't enter ribbons/awards.

Excellent point. That would cause trouble and be detrimental to the purpose of the site.

I think that it would be cool. I remember looking at my dad's ribbons in his shadow box when I was growing up, and I've always checked out people's collections since I've been in. It's not a measurement device to me, I just think it's a great and interesting way to start a conversation. Be proud of what you've earned, that's just my 2 cents.

I understand where you're coming from SPC Huggins. I grew up hearing the stories of my Dad's time in the military (though he had gotten rid of all his ribbons so I never actually saw them). Ever since I came in I've done the same thing as you. I look at other people's ribbons because they tell the story of their career. And you're right, it can be an excellent conversation starter. For me, as a Navy Chaplain, I love wearing my ribbons and medals because I often get the question, "Sir, how does a Navy Chaplain get an Army Good Conduct Medal and an Expert Rifle Marksmanship Medal?" That opens things up for me to tell them about my enlisted time in the Army and my journey to becoming a Chaplain. I only wish I had gotten some Air Force specific awards during my time in the Air Force Reserve that I could wear on my Navy uniform. Unfortunately of the 3 I earned, 2 are AF specific but are prohibited on Navy uniforms and the other is an all service award.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - Mikel; I couldn't care less one way or the other and wouldn't bother to list any. Besides, no one would believe me when I told them that I had been awarded the Medal of Honor (with two devices), the Victoria Cross (and Bar), the Order of Alexander Nevsky, The Cross of Honour for Valour, the Grand Croix of The Legion of Honour, and the Hilal-e-Kashmir - so why bother?

I want to know what people are thinking, so I pay attention to what people say and not who they say they are.

PS - I believe that the vast majority of RP members who bothered to post their awards/decorations would be honest.

No. Adding an awards section will subtly stratify the RP community. What's most important here is the unimpeded flow of thoughts and ideas not the size of our peckers.

I believe the overwhelming majority of RP members would be honest. I also believe the way the board is presently set up allows for members to readily exhibit awards and achievements earned during their careers.

This day and age the integrity of some people is on shaky ground. That said. I agree with Capt Seid Waddell. To embellish awards on a military based web site would blow ones credibility out of the water in front off all the membership. No rock big enough to hide under after that. I voted with the 37% bunch.

I think awards would look good as far as content on the site. However, would i publish my own awards. I don't think so. Thanks for allowing me an opportunity to give feedback.

Cynthia Croft - I suspect not badly written, never worry over what you say or how it is taken. Writing is difficult as one can't be sure people understand tone, delivery, nor give immediate feedback to correct misunderstanding of intent. We all need to remember we're in various areas of the world and country where attitudes regarding everything is responded to differently, sometimes quite radically. Thanks for explaining to us your reluctance to share your "accomplishments" (awards) because of how people in your area of the world have reacted in the past. I'm glad you feel accepted and comfortable here. (As a fellow civilian, and former teacher who worked hard to get an undergrad degree and MEd in Reading, along with K-12 teaching certificates that I held for over 25 years, you deserve to be recognized for earning your Specialist Degrees in Primary and Secondary Education and working for the Dept. of Education in Victoria. See there how I bragged on you?)

I'm not sure this sight is meant for any particular level of bragging about "me", but is more for the wit and wisdom that can be passed on from us more "senior" folks, and enjoying the outlooks of and discussing the concerns of those still coming through the ranks.
