Dude, the Army is totally gay. You can't ban what you are.

It's only gay if you push back. What happens in the desert stays in the desert.

Nope. What you do with your partner is up to you and shouldn't be a determining factor in your ability to serve. We did ban it in the past. Now they can openly serve. The Army didn't break. I know many out there thought it would but there were gay service members in the Army already that we didn't know. I have served with some homosexual service members. The one that was open about was a great soldier. He knew what he was doing and he extremely professional. It didn't matter that he was married to a man.

I will just say that there comes a point where it doesn't matter who saves your ass in combat. As long as they can do the job.

Should the Army ban homosexuality?

I was in the Army for 4 years. I was an intelligence analyst for my 10th Mountain unit, and deployed to AFG OEF 13-14. I always passed my PT tests, I did SSD1 when I was directed to. I mentored lower ranking soldiers in all aspects of the military, and succeeded in every situation I found myself. I'm gay. My sexuality has/had nothing to do with my work ethic or my warrior spirit. If you're scared to join the military because you may encounter a gay person, do us all a favor and just don't join. My brothers in my unit knew that I was gay, and it was a non-issue because at the end of the day they knew I would perform my job at 150%. End transmission.

Wow...... We're going back to this again? Why on God's earth should we ban homosexuality? If you want to use God as a reference for your answer, God made us in his image. So with that God would be a million things, yet nothing at the same time. Many leaders historically were "gay", should we take them out of the history books? Man love Thursdays isn't a new thing, and historically young boys were used in plays and in bedrooms of the powerful, not just in the Islamic faith. I reckon you never heard of the Priests who have been sentenced to prison for raping young boys here in the US? My next question would be have you worn the uniform? If you did, were you able to spot the "homo"? I knew a few "homo's" in my time that were some damn competent and effective leaders. So who they sleep with has no bearing on job performance. I've learned the ones who "hate" something the most and are the most vocal about it, ARE either the "Thing" they're talking about, afraid of what they're talking about, want to be a part of what they "hate" the most, or have no real clue as to what they're talking about. In this case, which one are you?

Back in my time in the Marines, Gays stayed in the closet. However we suspected we had a Gay Corpsman but we were not sure. We made this call based on his appearance and characteristics. We felt uncomfortable in his presence. Then one day he was gone with no explanations or reasons why he suddenly left our Company at Camp Geiger. It may have been someone complained to the CO who had him transferred or he asked to be transferred. And again we were not 100% positive if this Corpsman was gay or not.
So in 8 years (1953 - 1961) that was my only first hand experience iwith this subject & how things were in the "old corps".. I may have shared a two man or squad tent with gays and didn't know it. But I am so biased and so Irish Catholic I would not like serving with gays and I was only 18 - 24 years old when I served. I don't know about today but do know Actup in the SF Bay area pissed me off when they egged my 2003 Vette and tossed a bottle at my 1987 Vette in SF when I was driving home from the USMC Birthday Ball. They must have a thing for Vettes and Old Jarheads I guess??

Sgt Tom Cunnally - It's a good thing that was in CA and not TX or FL. Those bottles would've been met with a few rounds in their direction. I knew for a fact I had a gay teammember. The whole squad knew. But when it came down to his work, no one complained one bit. When it came to PT, he was a machine. In the end, it was the 90's and DADT was in effect. He came out, and was put out. He came and visited us before he was leaving the state, and it really pathetic he was done that way. Good man, good Soldier, would've been good as a leader. But who he slept with was the bigger issue. That's not right. I've had more issues with straight Soldiers and who they sleep with than any of my gay or lesbian Soldiers. I've had wives and GF's calling me at odark30 raising HOLY HELL on the phone. Multiple times to where my ex would listen in and laugh....at me. I've NEVER had one of my gay or lesbian Soldiers family members or lovers call and say anything. I wonder why.

You are entitled to your wants, feelings and opinions; it's truly one of the few things in this world you are entitled to, but you can wish in one hand and crap into the other and you know which gets filled first. As for myself, I am wishing the Army would issue us light sabers!

Perhaps the question you should ask is of yourself, and that is if you can make peace with the fact that gays are now, always have been, and always will be (and can now be public about it) in the military.

Wait - when are we getting light sabers? Do they have to be stored in the arms room or can we classify them as a plasma Chem light and keep them on us?

Look kid, I'm going to be straight with you. If you decide to join, your world is going to get much bigger and much smaller all at the same time. Whatever prejudices fly in the community you are growing up in, whatever beliefs you take for granted because they aren't challenged, will be upended. You will be exposed to people of all races, all religions, gay and straight. These people will be your superiors and , if you're in long enough, your subordinates. The whole world of ideas will be mashed into you and your very view of the world will be challenged. And while all this is happening and growing around you, what matters will shrink. The mission and the people to your left and right - not what they think or believe, but who they ARE as your brothers in arms - will become your world. Because when things get real, it doesn't matter if you're Christian or Hindi or atheist. It doesn't matter if your straight or gay. You WILL watch your brother's back and he will watch yours. And if you can't get to that point, you aren't needed.

My own brother was gay before he died from Marijuana and he was in the service. I don't think it's right but I will still treat you like family if your a homo . I was raised part of my life in the south were they think all gays aren't needed. Now I live in the mid west and I see a lot of gays and lesbian and guess what sir . My best friend is gay. I just want people's opinions.

There was more to your post originally where you offered an opinion rather than just asking for other peoples'. And you may claim someone who is gay as your best friend and love your brother, but if you think that they are not fit to serve our country, that they shouldn't even be afforded the chance to do so, based solely on who they are attracted to, then you sure as hell don't respect them.

You want to talk about what's needed? The military needs soldiers - men and women willing to put their lives in danger in defense of our country. Human beings that are capable of stepping up and working as a team to protect our citizens - all of them. No where in the list of the needs of the army is a need for a particular personal inclination towards the opposite sex.
