Should there be a "Space Branch" of the military or should it remain the way it is within the Air Force?

The proposal would put the branch under the command of the Air Force, though the commander would be a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, much like the Marine Corps' role in the Navy. The proposal sets a Jan. 1, 2019 deadline for the creation of a Space Corps. The Air Force is ...rejecting the plan.

I don't think that we need a "Space Corps" at all. We are, by no means, advanced enough in the area of space exploration to create an entire branch of the military devoted to just that. The USAF has handled the US military mission in space quite well. It should remain with the USAF. Once we actually leave low-Earth orbit again (farther than the Moon), we could consider this.

Should there be a "Space Branch", short answer yes. But honestly, I wouldn't be even thinking about forming up any form of a "space branch" until not only space travel is possible, but also space colonization.
When long term space colonization is a thing and space travel is more efficient/readily available/frequent, then a "Space Branch" will be a necessity. Part of any expansion process, whether it be nationally, globally, or even universally, there will be disputes of territory. A "Space Branch" will be needed to enforce territory disputes and generally keep the peace.

You realize that there is a Space Command within the Air Force right now right? Congress wants to make it another branch but under the Air Force - like how the Marines are a branch but are under the Navy.
There's a lot of things that go on in space already that I think most people are unaware. It's not just about space travel. That's not all that goes on in space.

Too many people get hung up on the sci-fi part of space.
Understandable, not many people are exposed to it. Space is not just about aliens and space travel and colonization. It's about satellites, ICBMs, GPS, comms, UAV data links, intelligence, etc. etc.
GPS in your car or on an F-22? Space.
Google Earth or grid topography? Space.
UAV ops? Space.
Your DirecTV or the VTC with your COCOM? Space.
And now with our adversaries putting stuff in orbit that is a direct threat to our own space systems, we are moving from being a service provider to a warfighting domain. Quickly.

I just went through the Space Cadre course and I agree that there should be a Space Branch just from the small amount of knowledge and training that I received. That is a great course by the way.

Navy Space Corps, Space Marine Corps, And a space transport corps of the Army. A space transportation corps could be the air forces mission in space. Essentially piloting troop transports for Army operations on other planetary bodies. That could also be a mission for a hypothetical Space Navy, but I thought the Air Force might feel left out in this new theater of operations so folding them back into the army on troop transportation missions would ease their heavy hearts. In this scenario the Army would still mostly operate on land, the navy would operate how it does in the ocean, but in space and be more of an air force for land units, and the new Space Marines would operate identically to how it currently works. In this hypothetical battlefield there would be little or no use for an air force.

Are you saying Mr. Spock will come off sounding illogical if he asks Colonel Kirk a question? Will Jaba The Hut going to be thrown off the trail because he can't find that smuggler Colonel Solo?
