Should we remove combat patches to be sensitive to those who don't have them?

"(Unit Name withheld) BCT ordered to remove combat patches during training at Fort NoMatter so the ones without them don't get hurt feelings.
Reason? "The unit just returned from Afghanistan and almost everyone has a patch but the large influx of new soldiers are E1 and E2s that have never deployed and they are saying they are left out because they don't have a patch."

This is about 3BDE 101 and it's a true story. Hopefully there isn't a war because with leadership like today's military has we are screwed.

How do you know its true? The 3BDE denied it but some soldiers say its within the BN's https://www.rallypoint.com/status-updates/1351740?urlhash=1354200

Good Lord, I hope that is just hypothetical.
I didn't deploy. It doesn't butt-hurt me to see others with deployment patches.

SGT Dave Tracy, you are not alone there. I am reading each and every comment and it seems you're backed 100% there. For some reason this post has my attention like no other ever will (Disbelief, Pure Shock, or something unknown to the world) but it has bitten in and can not believe it.

I don't have first hand evidence, SSG (Join to see), however, a few on this thread have stated they know the details on this even last June. And verify it did in fact happen. I agree with you that the CDR and CSM should just retire.

BCT banishes combat patches, badges to boost morale
You earn it, you keep it, you wear it. That's how soldiers epitomize their time in the Army, with the insignia and combat patches and badges that

In 22 years on active duty I never once wanted to earn a combat patch....

You should be ashamed of yourself. You almost made me spill me beer in laughter. This isn's a "everyone gets a trophy" thing. Either you get a combat patch or you don't.

A tough question. I do not know why anyone who did not serve in combat would want to claim. I see several veterans wearing hats that say "Vietnam Veteran," displaying ribbons awarded to those who served in the Vietnam War. It is common, and we should disregard those who make false claims.

Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time. You can't begrudge people for what they earned. If you were in a unit that deployed and you have combat experience, consider that your good fortune. If you were in a unit that didn't deploy, it's not your fault you didn't go to combat. Life isn't always fair.
The Army likes to adorn themselves with patches and bling, and that's their thing. The Marine Corps is a little more subtle about adorning their uniforms. Generally, you're not going to know just by looking at a Marine where they have been or what they have done unless you study their ribbons -- and that may not tell you everything... Where the recognition really matters is in your service record book. When it comes to getting promoted, all other things equal, the person that has combat experience is going to get selected over someone who doesn't have it simply because you have a known quantity versus an unknown. The Promotion board is going to go with the one who has been tested and is proven. Again, for those who didn't have the opportunity to go, that's just how it goes. Sometimes things just don't go the way you want, and that's just the way it is...
If you're in the Army and you rate the combat patch, wear it and don't be ashamed of making someone else feel bad just because they don't have one. At the same time, don't let it go to your head. Don't look down on someone who, through no fault of their own, didn't get the experience you did. They are not less than you; they simply didn't get the opportunity you did to prove themselves. Consider yourself lucky that you didn't catch a sniper bullet, have a mortar land next to you, lose a limb to an IED, get a brain injury, etc. The people who deserve our respect, and in some cases sympathy, are the ones that paid the price for their combat experience in blood.

The BCT commander should be relieved for blatant disobedience to Army Regulations.

If I could fill in an answer, it would be "hell no". That is part of the soldier's history. I enlisted at the end of Vietnam war, lots of combat patches and us newbies would think about bitching about it. I never felt left out because that's the way it was. I salute all combat patch veterans.
