"(Unit Name withheld) BCT ordered to remove combat patches during training at Fort NoMatter so the ones without them don't get ‪‎hurt feelings‬.

Reason? "The unit just returned from Afghanistan and almost everyone has a patch but the large influx of new soldiers are E1 and E2s that have never deployed and they are saying they are left out because they don't have a patch."

What the flock is going on with today's military. I have not earned that sacred patch but wish I had earned one. Not many opportunities in early to mid 80s. Know from those that have done that time that it is a special brother/sisterhood deal and I never get tired of hearing any story from anyone in military history talking the talk as they walked that walk. I am personally damn proud of each and every one of you and you wear that bad boy with John Wayne type pride as you can bet your sweet bippy I sure as hell would if I could.

Contrary to the dig at Air Force we to admire the work and danger that earns combat patches. If feelings are you concern military life is not an option for you. When someone has something I want I take myself out and work to earn it.

Crybabies. I would tell them how they can earn them :-). I got a CAB because of our SOPs. I got it promptly after returning. My friends in the infantry whom had earned CIBs via combat were disgruntled because they didnt get theres for over a year after returning. Needless to say, I didnt want to wear mine around them. But if a private is offended because they didnt get one, and never deployed, I would tell them to suck it up.

Combat patches are earned, so should we remove awards, jump wings and pathfinder patches because joe/molly doesn't have them? If that is the case take off all unit patches that were earned before you joined the unit!!! GTHOH!!!

You get awarded for what you work to achieve! Not everything in this universe has to be equal. That’s exactly one of the reasons our society is going to hell in a hand basket... too many want something for nothing. EARN IT!

You need to go beat their parents. I've been in 10 years and don't have a patch. Piss off.

First let me say to Ssgt Melissa Post, ha, ha, ha. "You want feelings, join the Air Force". Well earning a combat path in the ARMY, is a right of passage. Your unit, MOS and AO, brought you into a combat area. You earned a combat patch. In the Air Force we don't need to wear a combat patch to show we were in combat, not do we ground pounding mechanics need to brag about bein in combat to the local women. Combat patches get you respect from other earners, envy from the non earners and looks of distain from civilians, who don't know what's what in the military. Ribbons are treated the same way. If you have a ribbon for the Vietnam War, the guy next to you doesn't. Guess who going to be jealous? You have a combat patch, wear it proud. You earned it.

Give honor to whom honor is due. If you want a patch, volunteer for combat duty. Not everyone gets a participation trophy. Earners have sacrificed for the patch and should be honored for doing so.

Exactly! It's not like there is a secret process to getting a combat patch.

No, the uniform regulations allow you to wear the patch, so you should be able to wear it if you decide to

I remember my Truckmaster, a SFC (E-7), who was a Vietnam Veteran. I asked him why he didn't wear his combat patch, and jump and Ranger qualification badges. His reply was that the uniform regulation only required Name, US Army, and unit of assignment, and that the rest were at the discretion of the Soldier

No. It's been a tradition for a long long time. I served from 1973-1998 do to assignments and never made it to a combat zone. And never felt bad or envious over someone who did.

There is a level of acceptance and adaptability that our soldiers are SEVERELY lacking in these days.
Like understanding that the Army goes through cycles. About 22 years ago when i joined, we were in the cold war and "combat patches" were becoming fewer and fewer among service members. If you weren't a Nam, Grenada, or Gulf War Vet, getting a patch was presented with very limited opportunity.
Now as we draw back and draw down operations, our young soldiers need to understand that those patches are not worn by the veteran as a symbol that says "look what I did". Combat Patches are worn in memorial of all we sacrificed and those we lost.
To cheapen it down to a "participation patch" is deplorable and absolutely disgusting in my view. You already have watered down basic, you come out with 2 ribbons on your chest you did next to nothing for, now you want to whine that you don't have enough on your uniform to signify you've done something worth the notice.

THEN GO DO SOMETHING WORTH NOTICING.!

Until then remain humble, eyes and ears open. Listen, learn, and follow. Go to schools, volunteer for tours, and remain thankful you haven't had to lose, you haven't had to sacrifice. Be mindful that MANY of us would gladly give up our "Combat Patch" to have back the things, brothers, sisters, family, and lives we've lost.
