Here's the background. You are an experienced Soldier. You walk in to the commissary to see a young 2LT shopping with a headset on. You professionally and politely get the 2LT’s attention and address the deficiency. They blatantly are rude, dismiss your comment, and tell you that those rules do not apply to him as an officer. Whether you are an Officer or Enlisted, how do you react?

If A 2 LT Was A Problem,
Perhaps A Full Bird Could Explain The Situation To Him.

You did your part; you have thicker skin, move on. If he is a chronic jerk, his seniors will pick up on it, and take appropriate measures. Maybe the MPs will snag him instead. I had one of those in one command (an Ensign, same thing). He was borderline, didn't offend often. so I don't know how that eventually affected his career. I'm sure some seniors make a few allowances for youth, and wait and see, with maybe a hint or two of advice. You could compare new officers to freshly hatched fish: not all survive. I like "young 2LT". I've heard of older 2LTs, but mostly in movies or literature.

Just thinking of Academy Midshipmen. At some point they spend time in the summer with real sailors on real ships. That is supposed to be a lesson in real life. Most learn where they stand, and with any sense it carries over to their New Officer times.

One consideration is how public this demonstration is. If he is really noticeable about it, some sort of immediate response, courteously, is in order to set an example for the troops, then probably some kind of seeking therapeutic discipline from above for his derriere.

By the way, was he shopping for queen makeup?

I was a Navy Sea Bee, and we had one of those. So, one day, behind our tents a dozer dough a hole
and a water Buffalo filled the hole with nice clean dirty water, and we gave him a good
scrubbing. Supprizing how well that worked.

I agree with 1SG Case, Here is my story; While heading to the mess hall, A 1ST LT was leaving the mess, as we passed I smartly brought up my salute with "ALL THE WAY SIR", he failed to salute. Low and behold was the BN Sergeant Major and He torn that LT a new butt as I turned The LT saluted but SGM kept ragging on him. This all happened in 1969 at my favorite training area, Baumholder!
Love it all men! SFC Lockwood

There is an enlisted answer to this wait at a hair pin turn for that butter bar to drive by. And salute him as he enters a hair pin turn. You will smile think of me as he goes bouncing across a field with his hand up

Which military are we in? Old school, pre 2020 or today?
Old school rip the damn headset off his head and crush it.
Today's military just smile and apologize for bothering him.

Simple, I would first politely tell him that he is out of regs. If he tried the “I’m an officer, and the regs don’t apply” comment, I would then identify myself, place the soldier at the position of attention, get the soldiers unit, and commanding officer, and report his deficiencies for his chain of command to correct. Before executing I would give him the option to correct himself first….. usually they do the right thing.

Additionally, I would give a little mentorship on how the regulation applies to all soldiers.

Don’t worry army karma will catch up to them. It caught up to me and it was not pretty.

On a related note, have you ever noticed that folks who like to correct others on uniform issues are often wrong themselves because they actually didn’t READ the reg carefully? Here’s a case in point. 2001, Air Force. I’m a MSgt (E-7) wearing the blue pullover sweater. Ever since it came out in 1982, you were required to wear a tie with it since it was a v-neck. FINALLY they relaxed that and you no longer had to. I was in military pay taking care of business when a female E-4 behind the counter rather loudly in front of about 15 people said “where’s your tie, Master Sergeant?”. I replied (equally loudly) “what’s your name and who is your supervisor and may I see them?” Needless to say the room got very quiet as she provided the information and buzzed me into the back office.

Her supervisor said “again??” Apparently she delighted in doing that and had been told repeatedly to focus on her WORK, rather than what customers are wearing. This time it got her a letter of reprimand.

The term didn’t exist back then but apparently she was an early “Karen” lol.
