Since when is Veteran Suicide a laughing matter? I hope this lady was FIRED, and if not, why hasn't she been?

I think her statements were outrageous and despicable. Suicide among soldiers and veterans is a national tragedy and embarrassment. The rate among the military is significantly higher than in the general public. It is basically because DOD cannot and will not acknowledge and deal with the widespread PTSD in the ranks.
The numbers of combat tours that folks have had since Desert Storm are unprecedented. The human mind is not capable of dealing with that much stress and carnage, repeatedly, this many times. That being said, even one tour can cause significant PTSD.
It has been established scientifically (cf the thread on genetic testing vis-a-vis PTSD) that different people process this stress differently. Thus a person who had only one tour and never went outside the wire might have much worse PTSD than a person who was outside or at an OP continuously for 8 tours. Likewise, peacetime folks can have PTSD. On one of my ships we had an industrial accident and four sailors were crushed to death. Friends of theirs and folks involved in the rescue had PTSD, and they had no combat.
I do not think it is appropriate for people who are not trained to diagnose or treat PTSD to comment on the merits of others' claims. I have seen some very disparaging comments here in this thread on that vein. Yes, there are people who are goldbrickers, but let me be very clear - you CANNOT know what is going on in someone's head, just by seeing them sitting in a waiting room.
Please, leave the assessment of validity of PTSD and other related issues to professionals. Give these other folks the same benefit of the doubt that you would hope they give you.

I honestly can't say very much about the right treatment of ptsd and I have it. Granted it was from some events unrelated to the army but they still roam my mind sometimes during the day and often at night in my dreams. For me personally it has not helped to talk about it to professionals. The professionals I saw at behavior health didn't do very much for me. They just pretended to listen and then they would try to get me to go on anti depressants. The way I have coped with my problems has been to journal, self reflect, exercise and meditate. I don't trust anti depressants and I don't think I need them. I would be afraid that they would go in the wrong direction.

CPT (Join to see) If you need to talk, I'm not an "mental health pro" and I can't write for meds....

Anxiety issues can lead to so many bad things including the seizures that I have. Nearly passed out on the porch last night. Thankfully my leg strength gave me some time to collect myself. They say it is stress-related in lieu of anything else.. hmmm

SGT Fulgham - haha revenge is still good.
SMSGT McGrirr - Just damage control for VA. They need to burn it down and rebuild. That might be the next petition though
