For everyone:
The Iranian Ambassador to the UN had just finished giving a speech, and walked out into the lobby of the convention center where he was introduced to a United States Marine Corps General. As they talked, the Iranian said, "I have just one question about what I have seen in America." The General said, "Well, is there anything I can do to help?"
The Iranian whispered, "My son watches this show called 'Star Trek' and in it there is... Kirk who is Canadian, Chekhov who is Russian, Scotty who is Scottish, Uhura who is black, and Sulu who is Japanese, but there are NO Muslims. My son is very upset and doesn't understand why there aren't any Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans, Egyptians, Palestinians, Saudis, Syrians, or Pakistanis on 'Star Trek'. “
The General leaned toward the Iranian Ambassador, and whispered in his ear, "That's because it takes place in the future..."

I don't get Star Trek's "We all get along without money and have everything we could ever want but still come to work" thing.

What a "utopia" it would be though. They do get paid "credits" so its not exactly just getting everything you want, just a cashless society, which we're on the way towards. Plus you need something to do all day. Cruising the galaxy in a faster than light speed ship - pretty f--king "A"!

And before you broach the subject SSgt (Join to see), yes, much like the great Captain Kirk, I did have "things" for Yeoman Janice Rand, Drusila the slave girl in "Bread and Circuses", and YES, the green women of Orion.
There. It's now public knowledge!

Fuel for the fire - who put the food for thought on:
flip phones (communicator)
electronic tablets (the thing Kirk's yeoman would always hand him to sign)
pocket computers (tricorder)
tasers (phaser on stun)
flat screen TVs (the bridge view screen)
wireless remote control (McCoy controlling a brainless Spock in "Spock's Brain")
interracial relationships
motor driven wheelchairs (Captain Pike)
** added ** a cashless economy/society - we're on our way there
into the public mainstream?

Ah yes good point SFC (Join to see). Star Trek is obviously more serialized for the tube whereas Star Wars has greater mass appeal in the theater when you compare the limited budget TV show of the 60's to the groundbreaker that is episode IV.

The Navy asked to study the sets for the bridge and sick bay. Apparently they incorporated elements of their layout into ship design.

I remember the TV series growing up. The Final Frontier. Plus, Scottie's name on the show was Montgomery Scott, so I had to like him. My brother and I played with wooden phasers when we were 8 or 10.

CW5 (Join to see) On a side note Chief, James Doohan was one pretty bad ass veteran.

James Doohan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Montgomery "Jimmy" Doohan (/ˈduːən/ DOO-ən; March 3, 1920 – July 20, 2005) was a Canadian character and voice actor best known for his role as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the television and film series Star Trek. Doohan's characterization of the Scottish Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise was one of the most recognizable elements in the Star Trek franchise, for which he also made several contributions behind the scenes. COL Randall C. Not even worth raising shields. I hope Scotty isn't on board, because someone needs to play "Amazing Grace" on the pipes.

I think this was a thread a couple weeks ago... or something similar. I love both actually a huge fan of Sci Fi (BSG (all), Far Scape, Buck Rogers, Babylon 5, Red Dwarf, Firefly... there are too many to mention and these are just the ones in space... If we included Earth based (Brisco County JR, Star Gate...) we would need a whole new website...
