Every year POTUS walks out with 15-20 minutes worth of speech, 60 minutes of applause and grandstanding later all the major networks break it down to the level of a finely executed triple play in baseball. In my opinion the speech should stay, but undergo changes.

I would like to see the president give the speech from his desk at the oval office or perhaps from a podium in the rose garden or the "we got bin laden" hallway.

I would like no audience. We don't need republican or democrat members of congress bringing in guests that make statements. We don't need endless pauses for applause. We don't need partisan yawns. Just distribute a copy of the speech after its aired so if they don't want to watch it they can read it.

I would also like to watch my regularly scheduled programing on network TV, but I know that's too much to ask for so just give me the first two and if you want to throw in some gladiatorial combat to squash partisan beef that works too!

It is a Constitutional requirement. That said, there is no requirement to deliver it as a speech. It could be a letter. It has turned into a highly stylized Kabuki performance. A President who so desired could hand write on a 8.5" by 11" yellow note pad, Kiplinger bullet format.

Power points are useful if you're married. It gives you solid "real world" training on how to act like you're paying attention. That way you can tune out your wife while watching football without her getting mad.

SPC David Willis - We have cast iron pots and pans. The price of failure is to high to risk on self taught skills.

It’s optional whether you watch it or not, why should those that either approve or disapprove of the messenger be able to dictate the media used to fulfill the president’s Constitutional requirements?

How would any other method of delivery be more efficiently? It’s available to nearly anyone on the planet, if they want to watch, and delivered to your living room or device of your choice at no additional cost?

Maybe by doing the same thing without an audience that applauds after every sentence. Take an 1-1 1/2 he long speech down to 30 minutes without sacrificing content.

Personally, I'd rather POTUS just deliver the speech/briefing/letter/cliff notes/whatever from the Oval Office in 20-30 minutes and be done. All this blustering and grandstanding serves no relevant purpose.

Agreed. Not to mention in our threat environment we are in today it doesn't seem like the best idea to have so many elected officials in one place at the same time.

SPC David Willis - Exactly so! Another good reason for POTUS to deliver the speech from the WH.
