So there I was, no shit, at combatives training with a battle buddy when a 2LT comes up on us and began talking with us. When I told him my MOS, his eyes got all wide and he said, "Wow, you're like a paladin!"

I've never met you... I have met some that started out enlisted that are still afraid of an NCO. Basic Training taught them well.

As an O-1 (maybe a JR O-2) fresh out of flight school I tried to explain to a CW-3 with 3 tours as a chopper pilot in Vietnam that since I outranked him I would be logging my flight hours with him as the Aircraft Commander. 46 years later he still busts my chops about it. By the way he saved my life twice due to his flying skills. I think I still am picking pieces of jungle boot out of my butt.
