I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

A simple "Thank you." is enough.
I get it a lot. Of course, I don't know exactly why people tell me. [wink, wink]

When somebody says that to me (with sincerity), I am humbled. When we returned home, we were spit on and called "baby-killers" by the uninformed idiots and treated with much disrespect. We also had to endure an endless bunch of quacks when we would go to discuss our memories, SOB's who should have had their medical license revoked! As I am older, I have those memories, but I am always grateful when somebody respects my time in the military, which was honorable. When I see an older guy (and I am 71) wearing a world war 2 or korean veteran cap, i make it a point to thank them for their time served.

When another Viet Nam Vet Honors my service, I respond "Thanks for whatever you did to help me get Home Alive" and if I see a WWII Vet or Korean War Vet, I tell them "Thanks for whatever you did to help my Dad get Home Alive" Brother Bill.

My response is “It’s been an honor to wear the flag on my shoulder for this many years. You should really thank a Gold Star Family. They gave everything.“
