I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

It took me a long time to figure out a nice, appropriate thing to say. Like you, I say thank you for your support. It use to be awkward for me, but not anymore. I humbly accepted their thanks, then reply and tell them that I really appreciate their support. It means a lot.

I also same something like Thank you it was my pleasure to serve, but it is also getting trite, almost like "have a nice day"

While trying to be polite, I sometimes jokingly say, "Hey. I got paid for it: $124.00 per month."

I am 74 and I served from 70-92 and to this day it surprises me when someone thanks me for my service. Maybe it’s a little PTSD from the Vietnam era days.
I usually just smile and say thank you for acknowledging my service
