The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew-members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew-members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish

It was a very bad event with lots of background to the story. If one is interested they should read the book "The Attack on the Liberty"

On another note she is the reason Swift has a flag painted on top of the ship.

The USS Liberty has never been properly recognized for brave actions in the Eastern Med, is it time?

This burns me every time I think of it or hear about it.

"An Israeli military court of inquiry later acknowledged that their naval headquarters knew at least three hours before the attack that the odd-looking ship 13 miles off the Sinai Peninsula, sprouting more than 40 antennas capable of receiving every kind of radio transmission, was "an electromagnetic audio-surveillance ship of the U.S. Navy," a floating electronic vacuum cleaner.

The Israeli inquiry later concluded that that information had simply gotten lost, never passed along to the ground controllers who directed the air attack nor to the crews of the three Israeli torpedo boats who picked up where the air force left off, strafing the Liberty's decks with their machine guns and launching a torpedo that blew a 39-foot hole in its starboard side."

"According to this senior Israeli lead pilot, he recognized the Liberty as American immediately, so informed his headquarters, and was told to ignore the American flag and continue his attack. He refused to do so and returned to base, where he was arrested."

"The pilot's protests also were heard by radio monitors in the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon. Then-U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Dwight Porter has confirmed this. Porter told his story to syndicated columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak and offered to submit to further questioning by authorities. Unfortunately, no one in the U.S. government has any interest in hearing these first-person accounts of Israeli treachery. [Washington Report]"

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Haaretz provides extensive coverage of the USS Liberty incident - increasingly so as Israelis involved get older and want to set the record straight. But, like any news outlet, it is absolutely critical to be aware of their biases and interests. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

I think it's time that the US and Israeli governments admit that it was a blatant attack by the Israelis and not the "mistake" both sides are claiming.

For this I can NEVER forgive Israel nor "Stand with Israel."

I'm sure a few members have already seen exactly what I think of Israel, especially concerning the USS Liberty.

We kowtow to them and pander to them because we suckle from the arabian oil teet. And we know that were Israel to be left to itself they would more than likely nuke Iran, Syria, et al, until they glow. We therefore remain joined at their hip out of necessity, not friendship. President Murphy would gather all in the region around and announce that from this day forward, America is pumping its own gas and therefore leaving the area. "In short - you're on your own bitches. And while you islama-bretheren are high fiving yourselves, note that we're not gonna be here to bat for you if you piss off Israel. And last time I checked, Israel still has nukes. Have a nice day."

Also keep in mind that there's two sides to every story. We were the ones that came up with the "idea" of Israel sinking the Liberty. That's why I said "be careful what you wish for." How pissed would you be knowing that the senator you just voted for ordered your Liberty crew father/uncle/brother executed?

A lot of spook stuff is still classified. Hell, it wasn't until 1974 that the US Navy admitted it was reading Japan's codes in 1942. So it shouldn't be a shock that what happened to USS Liberty is still under wraps. And in case the survivor's didn't "get it" only two were allowed to testify at their own inquiry. The USN didn't want to know. Or...the USN was told *NOT* to know. If you know what I mean...

PO1 Nagel and Miller, 1LT Sandy, PO3 Murphy: Thanks for the dialogue. You guys can get wound up when you are passionate about something. We are all on the same side and devoted to our country. The only difference we have is about how we feel about our government. Nothing resolved here, except we know where everyone stands on this issue. I wish the best to all of you. BTW, I loved the Spycatcher. SFC William Hawes
