Here is a redacted version of a funding site's ad for an individual that use to be a member of my unit.

============

Hello good people,
My name is XXXXXX, a disabled veteran currently enrolled at the University of XXXXXX, studying a double major in XXXXXX and XXXXXXX. I worked extremely hard at my previous college, XXXXXXXXX College, to get here with a 3.85 GPA, and I am extremely lucky that my G.I. Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP) helps me manage going to such an expensive school. However, as a XXXXXXX Major, I am required to do a month long field course in XXXXXXXX over the summer...and my G.I. Bill, nor the YRP, covers summer tuition. This is a 4 credit course, and XXXXXX's cost is $1730 per credit hour, which makes it a total of $6920 for the course. I could really use some help meeting this goal, and anything you could give to support me would be greatly appreciated! I am also an inspiring photographer, and would be happy to log my 30 day journey for you.
Thank you so much for your time and support, Sincerely,
-Former Service Member

I see no issue with it. People use those sites for less honorable things than to get an education.

Most of the rest of us do not though MSgt Copeland. Mind you now that you have vouched for them to me I will accept that they ARE a Veteran and attending school. How ever had I come across the crowd source site on my own I would not be willing to help as there would be no way for me to verify. Further more your friend should have maybe gone to a school they could afford instead of relying on the generosity of strangers. I don't mean to sound heartless or rude but I don't think it is fair to expect others to foot the bill because you want to attend a school you can't afford Hell I would love a new Chevy too but I can't afford one so the old one will have to do.

We did use fundly on here a few months ago to help a veteran who had an emergency need but unless it's someone I've talked to directly or had contact with, I would suggest this is a scam or sadly someone who got the idea to solicit money this way for themselves which in my opinion is inappropriate.

Thank you PV2 Lisa Wilcox for helping the veteran who was in need there are so many of them.  I wanted to try to make an adopt a disabled veteran into your family program.  I now there are many people out there with lots of land and if they could just allow a little corner for a tiny cabin on it the veterans homeless would go down.  I already have permit to build a small 10 x 16 would have wood stove heat.  But in need to build it so the veteran would have to be able to work like that a bit to help with a bit of upkeep. But many love being outdoors with trees in Northern MN.

I Just couldn't DO IT! I am way too proud. I'll get a part-time job at McDonalds before I ask for money from strangers. Nope.

I wouldn't use go find me for my personal financial problems except as a last resort. That's just not how I was brought up. Reduce expenses, get a part time job, or work more would be me solving my own problem.

Shut him/her down!

Must be an "X-gen" veteran who is paving a path to a life of entitlements. Next thing you'll see is their name on placards "Disabled Veteran Running for Congress".

First, give BACK to fellow veterans who are REALLY struggling, then you will receive your just rewards down the road.

Andy you are right about that....X-gen vets can create problems. When I worked as a case manager in the Warrior transition unit I had experience with a lot of them who were injured NOT during combat operations i.e. AT, or playing basketball during mobilization training that cried "I deserve it"!!! Made me sick

Roxanne - Indeed! Although military personnel are, in a manner of speaking, a reflection of the rest of US society, one would hope that the discipline and "can-do" experience would impart a broader beneficial change in the "entitlement" minority.

I absolutely Hate and Love GoFundMe I have just experienced one of my old battle buddies utilizing it and using that he was a poor vet and was homeless as a reason to get funds and assistance ... I dug a little deeper only to find that he really needed the money to pay off legal fees so he wouldn't go to jail... This I find very offensive there really are homeless vets that need the money ! I warn people all the time that if they come across a GoFundMe me account dig a little deeper message the individual and get the background story and see if it matches the profile . This will ensure that the person knows where their money is going and being spent
