What are some of the most absurd incidents you have witnessed of an individual or group being awarded the Combat Action Badge (CAB)?
SSG B,
He didn't even make it out of the PP, he was declared KIA by the powers that be, our guy ended up with a CAB from the incident, many of the rest of us were put in for them as well due to the mortar incident anyways, but it was one of many that most of had as one of the events that got some of our guys their CABs, we pretty much had our whole MTT team get submitted about a dozen times that year, and under the then current standards you could only be awarded one badge for action, although for many of us it took 3,4,5 separate events being submitted before it was approved for the badge.
Someone recently told me that you can now get subsequent badge recognition for multiple events now.
Here is my take on it SSG Broadbent. At the end of the day, it is that Soldier who will have to tell the story of how they earned that award. They will be the one sitting across from another group of veterans swapping "war stories" and they will have to tell their story. If they are proud of how they earned their award, then there is no issue. If they are not, then their story will change so that they can "save face" with their audience.
Much the same way that you and SFC Baber recall the same incident in Iraq from 2005. You guys remember the same sequence of events. The same story. Hopefully for integrity sake, the person who was in the latrine and was hit by shrapnel tells the same story.
MSG Stankovich,
The IA CSM was actually killed that day from the attack and the SPC from my MTT Team was awarded his about a month later from the event, although he didn't suffer more than a mild leg burn and being covered with the contents of the PP, so not sure how much embellishment has gone into his attempted war story over the last 8 years since then. I do know that he was injured approximately 3 months later from and IED attack, which garnered a PH and he went home a month early from our rotation. I saw him 1 more time about 6 months later just before he PCS'd and have seen or had contact with him since.
