I have been notified that I will be assigned to LRMC. I imagine that I will be living in the BOQ as a single officer (if space is available) but I don't know if that's the case. What are some things I should look into doing while in Germany? I have a truck that I recently purchased that I'm considering leaving stateside. Is there a decent used car market near the base?

I'd appreciate any information that anyone can provide!

When I was last in Germany, at LRMC in fact, here is the information that I know:

Base housing was premium as LRMC is a small base. Most folks, to include single officers, lived off base either in an apt or a house. As for a vehicle, you can certainly leave your truck in the states as Ramstein Air Base had a "Lemon Lot" where people who were PCSing/ETSing and didn't want to take their vehicles would put them there. You could find some really nice cars for some really good prices.

As for things to do...depends on what you like. I can't remember the name of it, but there was a Greek join in the town of Landstuhl...man that food was bomb dot com. Plenty of hiking trails. Beer, of course. Castles everywhere. Landstuhl has a great little MWR office that has all kinds of things to do. Also, there was a local base news flier that had all kinds of things listed for activities.

Small French villages are only 30 minutes away by car. Get on the train for some marvelous day trips. You must explore the castle ruins in Landstuhl. The town is very friendly to Americans. I encourage you to get a sponsor. This will make your transition so much easier. Contact the LRMC commander for this.

Be sure to travel to the famous battlefields. You will have a better sense of history and mission.

If you can also go over to Trier, on the Luxembourg border. We saw that with our AF son in 2001.

You're only an hour from Frankfurt Hahn (one of Ryanair's largest hubs). From there you can go to almost anywhere in Europe for extremely cheap prices... you will probably pay more to park at the airport for 4-days than your actual airfare. USAREUR has a 4-day weekend every month, even on month's when there isn't a holiday, so take advantage of it and travel.

It can be hard lining up RyanAir flight dates with 4 day weekends, but sometimes possible on more frequently traveled routes (like London particularly which can the be a hub for other locations). We usually took leave mid-week to mid-week to accommodate some lower airfares and reserved long weekends for locations just a bit too far for a day trip or normal weekend.

Hit all the local fests, they are the most fun. Get some delicious gluhwein on the streets during the holidays. Hit Oktoberfest once, but I think it's not worth the time and money. Too many people, too much craziness, rollercoaster was fun though.

Hit up Neuschwanstien in Austria, I recommend a bike tour in the area below as well. Visit Dracula's supposed grave site. Visit Rotenburg, amazing city. Go to Berlin every chance you can. Museum island is phenomenal. I found some great Asian and Latin food in northern Berlin. Hostels are a great deal, don't be afraid to stay at them.

Amsterdam is a wonderful city of culture and food. Bruges is one of my favorite places in Europe, chocolate, beer, and history on every corner. Prague is a magnificent town, you must go, it suits everyone's style.

Avoid the red light districts. Walked through one, felt dirty and sad.

I brought a souped up Chevy S-10 while there, never utilized it's functionality once, just spent a lot of money on gas. Buy a cheap POS with good mileage and plenty of seats. Or, rent awesome Audi's and BMW's on your weekends. Or use the train and public transit which is exceptionally effective and efficient.
