We have 20 people that just stopped coming to drill. What do we do? How can we get them back? How fast can we get them out if they don't want to be in the reserves anymore?

Why aren't they coming? You need to figure that out. Each major command has a different policy and procedure for dealing with NPs. One way that will help accelerate the process is to cut AT orders for all of them to appear on a particular weekend. You need to plan that some will attend, but those who don't are able to be separated faster because now they haven't attended something they were ordered to.

Some NPs may be a reflection on the training though. Something you should look at. If you ask the Soldiers why, many times they will tell you. Then you can be proactive in minimizing NPs.

1SG (Join to see) - finding out why they aren't coming is the key here. I had a unit that started having a lot of NPs and it was determined though investigation that it was because females were being sexually harassed. It also may be caused by toxic leadership. If there are problems that exist, they need to be addressed at the same time or you are bailing out a boat with a big hole in it.

My step dad Jesse William Furman from Buffalo new york was a mp. Dishonest. Liar. When the union found out he was fired. He died young. 52.

CW4 Craig Urban not sure of the significance. NP is non-participant. MP is military police. Is this a typo?

Call them. Send certified letters in the mail so they HAVE to sign for it (this way you will be notified the address is still valid), make personal visits. If all of the above fail to get them to return to their appointed place of duty, then the paperwork for processing them out for Unexcused absence should be pretty straight forward. Get with your Admin office to double check what the process is. As long as all your ducks are neatly lined up, then the process to kick them out should not take long.

Also, I recommend you speak with the JAG office to see what legalese needs to be followed.

1SG (Join to see) - No worries, MSG. My Reserve BN has some serious issues with a large number of NPs. These steps were actually recommended to us by JAG at out BDE UTB.

WTH! No wonder we have so many problems. Use existing processes and act like professional service members.

What are some ways to correct having non participants in your unit?

1SG (Join to see) Good luck on this one which is also a subject near and dear to my old heart having been the cadre staff of a MC rifle company located in Orange, TX. We had many many no-shows and went crazy trying to get them back in the fold. Maybe offering them an alternate training day to cover their obligation if they would come in and do some work at the training center. We tried to contact them, assigned them to temporary active duty, declared them deserters, all in an attempt to get them back. Many of them lived way back in the swamps and coastal towns in LA and worked odd hours either in refineries, oil rigs, off shore and on fishing boats. We finally had to administratively discharge them and we always hated to do so because they didn't realize that a General Discharge was not going to help them in future years.

Please understand that I'm coming to this from a position of ignorance as I spent my entire career on active duty, but how is this a thing? Am I understanding that you're saying 20 some reservists from your unit have decided that they are not going to come to drill and that this is somehow not AWOL? In the active side of the house this would be a very simple matter to correct.

I know SGT Robertson. My first 10 years was active duty. I got in trouble once for being late on a PCS move. I missed the report day by a day and had notified the chain of command of the issue, but the reserves are different. A "whole different animal" as they say.

1SG (Join to see) - Too right! The Reserves sure are a whole different animal. If I were to offer any advice it would be use whatever means you have available to reach these guys, be it by phone, social media (don't underestimate this for reaching younger soldiers!), or just stop by; find out where their head is at if you can. I'm sure there is a mechanism in place to chapter these bums out, but as I have never even been tangentially party to such a thing, I wouldn't know what it would be. Good luck.

i once heard that the unit called the police for a health and wellfare visit, when sm didnt call or show to drill, and yes rc is a whole differnt animal, but if the s-1 is high speed and low drag things like reduction in rank, separation from service can be done, my concern is having 20 sm's, not showing up for drill company, bn, or brigade, if its company leadership needs to step back and look at themselves there might be a problem, bn/brigade they are larger animalis so 20 may not look that bad but somebody should be saying wtf

Send hem an official notice preferably from the commander and give them a choice either show up or be processed out. My unit did it and eventually got rid of the dead weight.

1SG (Join to see) Wanted to follow up with you to see how things have worked out, one way or the other, since this was posted back in April. Has your unit made any progress in either getting people back to drill or in any of the other alternatives suggested in this thread. Best Regards,

Sir, things are going great! My full time staff worked with the Soldiers that wanted to serve and put packets together for those that wanted to stay at home. I personally saw 21 letters go out to those that said they were not coming back. The letter outlined the process for them to exit the Army/ Army Reserves. We are moving forward with those that want to serve. So Sir, things worked out good. I did follow the advice of someone that responded to my post. As directed, I was the bad ass that I needed to be.
