What are the chances that members of the Air and Army Guard and reserves will be able to collect on their retirement before age 60 or 55?

Like my Dad told me: You can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up first! In the Reserve you know the deal, that's it. Oh by the way - I GET TO COLLECT FRIDAY!!!!

TSgt Ralph Hetzel - Yea, I've been waiting for this day for a long time now. One good reason to look forward to turning 60!

I will turn 60 in 15 years. I think I am going to have to wait for a little while. Wait Have not retire yet!! Good people, thank you for your service and happy retirement!!!!

0. You should have served on active duty if you wanted immediate retirement pay upon retirement from the military... I like it the way SGM Mikel Dawson said it better. Why would anyone stay on active duty if the retirement benefits were the same if served in the reserve/guard.

Some of us have served quite a bit of active duty and multiple deployments. Why not just treat it like the commissary and exchange benefits that eventually became the same for all?

TSgt Ralph Hetzel - Hooah and thanks for your service. But, like you I had a decision to make when I decided to stay or go, and I decided to stay on active duty. The pay and benefits are different, but we know when we sign, what the rules are. I very much appreciate and understand both the service and sacrifice of our RC comrades, but the two are not equal and hence neither are the benefits. If the pay and benefits (and retirement) were the same, why would any choose to stay on active duty?

Like COL Charles Williams, when I signed up Reserve I KNEW the deal. And that was in my long term plan - to get the retirement at 60 when I needed it. Sure the Retirement pay isn't the same, but for a part time job - I think it's great. For me, I'm getting a good retirement. I knew with the type of jobs I had at the time I needed a little more, so RESERVE. Don't go complaining now at the end, after the game is over.

Here's what I know: On 28 JAN 2008 when the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was signed into law, the following rules applied - for every 90 days DEPLOYED to either IRAQ; or AFGHANISTAN; or KUWAIT; Waters surrounding either, or on Contingency Orders for other places, then 90 Days are drawn from the AGE 60 retirement. [Example: 1 FEB 2008 you get into Kuwait with follow-on duty in Iraq, and on 31 JAN 2009, you and your unit leave Kuwait for CONUS. You've been there 365. The Military takes away 1 year, so you can start drawing at age 59.] PDRMA leaves counts towards this. I believe that the other accumulated leave counts as well.
The lowest that you can start drawing is Age 55. Same as Federal Employees.
If it's been modified to be as the CMSgt Dominguez states, then this is new to me.
I do know that when you are putting in your retirement packet, that at the top of your DD214's - and if it's FOR SERVICE AFTER 28 JAN 2008, you need to write: FOR RETIREMENT AGE LOWERING and highlight it/underline it. The individuals who work at the various HQ's/ HR Centers will not see it, unless YOU WRITE IT.
LASTLY: when asked - "Why didn't CONGRESS start the process instead of 28 JAN 2008, and either on 12 SEPT 2001, or in early OCT 2001, when the US got involved in A'stan? Their answer is: IT'LL COST TOO MUCH."

Wow. Ok. Thanks for the info. You cleared up a lot. I am shocked at the reaction of "IT'LL COST TOO MUCH". In my opinion, that is horse shit of them to even think. Thank you for responding.

You're Welcome. I just went thru (within the past 12 months) submitting my retirement packet. I remember what I wrote at the top of the DD214's. And I know that this is a process. Each service is different, yet each service is about the same in terms of retirement.

Lowing the age to 55 has been voted on a few times, and each time it has been voted down. I served 11 years Army and 27 years Air National guard. I retired last year with 38 good years and I still have three more years to wait.
