Almost 14 years were spent at Ft. Hood. 22 years and retirement. I loved there. My first house was built there. Yes sir some like it some don't. It is what you make of it.

Over the years, people talk negatively about Ft. Drum. I absolutely loved it there.
There is nothing 100% of people will agree on. Not even death. There is always someone who thinks they are the one who will get out of this alive.

That was the best assignment for me. I would still be there if my wife hadn't been selected for warrant. Great place to be

I don't think Fort Bliss would make the top 5 worst duty stations, maybe not even top 10. But, I was not a fan. PCSing to Fort Carson from there felt like one of the best days of my life!

SGT (Join to see) - At least you weren't there in 75 before we moved into new barracks. My unit was in older than WWII barracks. They were called the mule barn area. Actually had cracks in the walls where you could see outside. Made it really nice in freezing weather.

I've got to disagree with Cp Casey and the Guard.
I was up at Greaves and Casey was a great break from being up on the DMZ.
A lot of our armories in the Guard were nice facilities with nothing to relatively minor things to complain about. Aged - yes, needed some facelifts - yes but better than WWII barracks and training facilities at some AD posts we stayed at. Anyone go to Bliss for AT in the early 90's before they wrecking balled those old facilities - you wanna talk about dag nabbit disgusting! Made our armory and facilities look like a 5-star resort.

I started Guard and agree there.
As far as AD, I'm at Casey and love it here. I know 90% of people hate it, but I actually enjoy it, so it is what you make it.

The lack of "NTC" is surprising. Consider yourself lucky then I guess...

As permanent party at Ft. Riley, I enjoyed a couple weeks at Ft. Irwin. Also enjoyed Little Creek, Virginia; Wildflecken, West Germany; West Berlin (a 3-month vacation); & Ft. Leonard Wood. In other words, anywhere away from Ft. Riley.

I loved going to NTC. Being an Aviation Officer it meant self deployment. Which means gas up the birds boys, we get to R.O.N. in Vegas!!!

NTC sucked.. but Fort Chaffee (Arkansas NG training site) is worse. At least at NTC there's nice scenery and the heat is a dry heat. At Chaffee, 95 degrees and 90% humidity are common.. and the WWII barracks are a nice touch..

SPC John Parmenter - First guy to mention Wlidflecken. I was there from 83-87 Loved every minute of it. Went to ROTC duty in Billings, Montana and loved that too.
Hunted all the time. I guess being far from the flagpole and working for commands that operated on maximum distance, minimum guidance was what I really loved.

I never had a posting I didn't like. Lucky I guess. I avoided places like Polk and Leonard Wood. My favorites were Ft. Bragg and Camp Hovey/Casey.

I was 18 and full of it, I loved Korea and the people, went many places in the yamas, watched burials and went with turks and with ROK Marines White Horse div. where many other GI's didn't go. Spoke pretty fair Korean before I left. Wish I could return, but lungs won't let me. I hope you had as good a time as I did, quite a few officers wore my uniforms, because they weren't allowed to go to the ville's. Laugh about it.

I go back to Korea every year. My wife is Korean and I have business contacts in Seoul that I see every year. By the time I got there in the 80's, officers were allowed to go downtown. I spent most of my off time walking around the countryside, traveling to different areas. i couldn't believe how many of my fellow soldiers never left the post. Those are the guys who hated it because they didn't know how to enjoy being there.

If you think Fort Hood is bad you have absolutely no idea what other nasty places are out there just waiting for you to show up. I hope you get out of the military very soon before they send you to 2ID, 10Th Mountain, Fort Wainwright or some other wonderful spot. Fort Hood was my first and last duty station. Can't say I loved it but I did like the duty there the local off duty recreational activities are limited but if you have a car Texas awaits you. I am curious exactly what exactly do you hate about Fort Hood?
