I was in in the 80's and early 90's. Four months after getting married, I got orders for the 25th ID @ Schofield Barracks, HI. Not bad, especially since of the 5 of us at my levee breifing, 3 poor souls got the DMZ in Korea, unaccompanied of course (not what you want as a newly wed)!
While it wasn't bad duty, after my son was born, I was on Food Stamps because of the cost of living. Plus, because of expenses, we never saw any of the other islands & about all we could afford to do was go to the beach. If it hadn't been for scuba diving I think I would have gone crazy. Really, any duty station has the potential to suck, or rock. As others have said, it amounts to what you make of of it.

Camp Casey Korea was my last duty station before I retired. I hated that place mostly because of the unit I was in. The only other place I hated was Fort Leonard Wood. That's where I did Basic.

At 1979 at Fort Gorden,Ga taking training was just fine. But when I took the shuttle bus inside base there was a guy who was offering drugs, watches, rings, exc. to sell and this is something that I will never forge I was a private. When we got a weekend pass I was with a parter soldier that has dark skin and I have white skin we went to down town in one side of the side walk there were a sign indicating No Blacks aloud did not let my parter in.this continue on the same side walk so we cross the street then there were signs in front of stores indicating no whites aloud and this really shocked me.Also there were soldiers that got a hold up taking there money inside the military base.In this year soldier were paid in cash you had to report for pay to a officer. Worse but not the training. The best would be 97TH Signal BN at Coleman Barracks Mannheim, Germany The barracks was not so good but we were treated very well like when we asked for a weekend trip to Paris or Londen the military officer will approve friday & monday off without taking days off leave and this was a unforgettable venture. The very best is "All for one" all US armed forces together to accomplish the Mission at Irak Liberty,Ballat & Anaconda

Any duty station is what YOU make of it. Find something to do worthwhile while you are there. You never know.

Five worst places? #1 CONUS not doing my job. #2 Asia not doing my job #3 Europe not doing my job #4 Hawaii not doing my job #5 Alaska not doing my job. 11B (aka Infantry because "Badass Motherf%$ker is not an official M.O.S. title). Grunts are happiest being grunts.

My dad was a Warrant Officer in CID. Even though he was from Kentucky, he never picked any post near there for fear of being sent to Ft Campbell. Not a happy place for a cop to be.
Years later in my Air Force time at Sewart AFB near Nashville, we would sometimes get sheets delivered that were blood-stained. The story was that the same laundry did Ft Campbell and us.

I'm currently a DoD civilian dependent stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. I'm not crazy about this place. I feel sorry for the active duty personnel here.
