Stationed in Germany in the late '60s, I met a lot of old war vets in local taverns, and they said Graf was worse than Russia

Worst duty I ever had at any location was the 2nd Inf Div. I did duty as PFC and SPC at 1/38th FA at Camp Stanley, Korea. I felt like a prisoner trustee that was unchained and allowed a few hours once a week to have a few beers and a meal down town. Standard day started at 0500 and ended about 2000, six day work week but we worked at least two Sunday's a month also spent in the field. We were packed in barracks like sardines, 18 soldiers packed into an eight man room. No wall lockers, no personal spaces, we lived out of duffle bags locked on top of bunk beds. All our personal gear was locked in storage because there was no room for tv, stereo, refrigerator, coffee pot or anything else. One big set of barracks was refurbished then all other housing was bulldozed. Then an entire BN was crammed into that one super hooch. Then construction was began on three other super hoochs. It was supposed to be only six months but was still the same when I left 13 months later. I went down to Camp Humphries. Still the best duty I ever had. I extended there three time. I tried to extend again but the 1SG said I had to much time in Korea away from the USA. Went back as a SGM to Camp Red Cloud in 2003. I had virtually every extra duty that any SGM was supposed to have on that post because for eight months I was the only SGM not holding a Division Staff position. I did get a break when my BN CSM retired and there was no replacement for him Army wide. They had to wait for the academy to graduate so a replacement could arrive. So I got the BN CSM slot for four months rated period. Miraculously all the extra duties except one went away for that time. I was the only school trained person qualified for that position. I got face time with the Div CSM where he explained to me why I still had that one extra duty for Division Staff even though I was not Div Staff and was a sitting CSM. Somehow I doubt it ever got any better. I read about 2ID going straight from Korea to a combat zone either Iraq or Afgahnistan. Families were left in Korea with no sponsor and inadequate family support groups. Then relocated Army wide after the combat tour of duty.

SGM Joel Cook My brother left Benning and the 2nd ID in 1964 ? after participating in the ‘testing’ for Air Cav. (Questionable dates here)
Arriving in Korea, he was pissed! He had to have the Indian Blanket patch re-sewn onto his uniforms!
